Crop loans up to ₹2 lakh to be waived under government scheme.
Farmers paying loans on time to get incentives up to ₹50,000.
₹20,000 crore allocated for agricultural electricity bill waiver.
The Maharashtra government has announced a major relief package for farmers affected by unseasonal rains and hailstorms across the state. The government has approved compensation worth around ₹164 crore to support farmers whose crops were damaged during heavy rainfall in March this year.
The decision is expected to provide immediate financial relief to lakhs of farmers who suffered severe crop losses due to sudden weather changes.
According to an official statement from the Maharashtra Directorate of Information and Revenue, the state government has approved a total compensation amount of ₹1,64,83,44,000 for farmers affected by unseasonal rains.
The relief amount will be distributed to farmers whose crops were damaged due to heavy rainfall and hailstorms in March 2026. The government has directed officials to ensure that the compensation reaches affected farmers as quickly as possible.
The administration and concerned departments have been instructed to speed up the allocation and payment process so that farmers can prepare for the next farming season without delay.
Many parts of Maharashtra witnessed heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions during March, causing major losses to farmers. Several standing and ready-to-harvest crops were destroyed in the fields.
Crops that suffered significant damage include:
Grapes
Wheat
Vegetables
Horticulture crops
Farmers across the state had demanded financial assistance after suffering heavy economic losses due to the unexpected weather conditions.
The Maharashtra government said the main objective of the compensation package is to provide immediate financial support to affected farmers so they can restart agricultural activities and manage upcoming farming expenses.
Officials have been asked to complete the relief distribution process at the earliest to avoid delays in assistance.
Along with the compensation package, the Maharashtra government has also reaffirmed its previously announced farm loan waiver scheme.
During the presentation of the Maharashtra Budget 2026-27 in March 2026, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that crop loans of up to ₹2 lakh outstanding till September 30, 2025, would be waived.
Farmers with pending crop loans up to ₹2 lakh will receive full loan waiver benefits.
Farmers who regularly repay loans on time will receive incentives of up to ₹50,000.
The government believes this move will directly benefit millions of farmers and reduce financial stress in the agriculture sector.
The state government has also taken a major decision regarding electricity bills for farmers.
An allocation of ₹20,000 crore has been made to waive electricity bills for agricultural pumps up to 7.5 horsepower. This initiative is expected to reduce farming costs and provide relief to rural households struggling with rising expenses.
These farmer-focused schemes are an important part of Maharashtra’s ₹7.69 lakh crore budget for the financial year 2026-27.
The state government has given special importance to:
Rural development
Agriculture sector
Irrigation projects
Infrastructure development
Economic reforms
According to the government, these initiatives will help strengthen the rural economy and improve farmers incomes across the state.
Agriculture experts believe that compensation packages and loan waivers provide temporary relief to farmers facing financial difficulties. However, they also stress the importance of long-term solutions such as:
Better crop insurance systems
Weather-based risk management
Improved agricultural markets
Modern farming techniques
Stronger irrigation infrastructure
For now, the Maharashtra government’s relief measures are expected to provide significant support to farmers affected by unseasonal rains and crop damage across the state.

Compensation support, loan waivers, and electricity bill relief are expected to help lakhs of farming families recover from recent losses. While these initiatives offer immediate assistance, experts believe sustainable agricultural reforms and better risk management systems will be equally important for securing farmers long-term economic stability.
