Farmers in Madhya Pradesh are set to benefit from a major initiative to make certified and improved seeds more affordable and easily accessible. The Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Seed Producer and Marketing Federation is preparing to expand the production, sale and distribution of gluten-free wheat, hybrid maize and vegetable seeds.
These improved seeds are expected to be available at around 50% lower prices than those in the private market. The move aims to reduce farmers seed costs while improving access to certified, hybrid and horticultural crop varieties.
On the instructions of Cooperative Minister Vishwas Kailash Sarang, preparations have begun to expand the sale of gluten-free wheat seeds. These seeds will be distributed to farmers through the Consumer Cooperative Federation and consumer cooperative societies.
For this purpose, Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed with the Consumer Cooperative Federation and other major institutions. The move will create additional channels through which farmers can purchase the seeds.
The State Seed Federation is already producing and marketing hybrid maize, vegetable and healthy gluten-free wheat seeds. According to Managing Director M.K. Dixit, these advanced seeds are being supplied to farmers at prices approximately 50% lower than the private market.
Lower prices are expected to help farmers reduce expenditure on certified seeds while encouraging the use of improved varieties. The Federation will also strengthen its distribution and marketing network to increase seed sales and ensure that the products reach more farmers.
The Board of Directors meeting of the Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Seed Producer and Marketing Federation also discussed increasing seed production within the state.
Instructions have been issued to develop a programme for producing seeds of more hybrid crops. The broader objective is to ensure that certified, improved, hybrid and horticultural crop seeds are readily available to farmers across Madhya Pradesh.
The Federation plans to work with consumer cooperative societies and other major government institutions to improve the sale and distribution of gluten-free wheat and vegetable seeds.
Through these partnerships, farmers will have more locations from which to purchase seeds. This is expected to make the distribution system easier and improve the overall availability of improved seeds.
Cooperative Minister Vishwas Sarang has also stressed the need for the Seed Federation to move beyond traditional working methods and adopt a more business-oriented approach.
Several administrative measures have been approved to make the Federation financially stronger and more competitive. The government has approved the acquisition of a new headquarters building for the Seed Federation. The required paperwork and administrative procedures have been directed to be completed, with the new office targeted for establishment within six months.
To improve the assessment of financial activities, the Federation will also engage an outsourced Chartered Accountant (CA).
In addition, a special committee comprising experts and departmental officers will be formed to review the Federation’s bylaws and recommend necessary amendments.
The government is also focusing on digital communication to ensure farmers are aware of the availability of affordable seeds.
A professional social media agency will be appointed to promote the Seed Federation’s activities, plans and products. The agency will help spread information about the low-cost seeds and other initiatives among farmers through social media platforms.
The meeting also focused on diversifying the Seed Federation’s business and creating a single-window system for farmers.
Under this approach, farmers will be able to access services related to certified, hybrid and horticultural seeds at one place. The agendas for the upcoming general meeting were also approved during the meeting.
Several decisions related to the welfare of Seed Federation employees were also taken.
The overall strategy is aimed at strengthening seed production, marketing and distribution in Madhya Pradesh while making improved seeds more affordable and accessible to farmers.
