The Indian three-wheeler market saw a strong performance in August 2025, with both passenger and goods carrier sales rising significantly. This surge comes ahead of the government’s GST reduction, which is expected to boost sales further during the upcoming festive season.

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), total three-wheeler sales reached 76,759 units in August 2025, registering an 8.3% growth compared to the same month last year. This growth reflects the increasing demand for affordable mobility and last-mile delivery solutions across urban and semi-urban areas.
Passenger three-wheelers were the top contributors, with sales growing 8.8% to 63,854 units. The rise in demand highlights the growing need for cost-effective city transport options. Operators are expanding their fleets to meet the rising commuter demand.
The electric passenger carrier segment also saw positive movement, as more operators are exploring eco-friendly urban mobility solutions, although the e-rickshaw market saw some challenges.
Goods carrying three-wheelers posted even stronger growth, with sales increasing 15.6% to 9,751 units. These vehicles are becoming the preferred choice for small businesses and logistics companies for last-mile delivery of goods, packages, and essentials. The rise also indicates the growing influence of the booming e-commerce sector on small commercial vehicle demand.
Electric three-wheelers made remarkable progress in August 2025. E-carts recorded an impressive 362.9% growth, reaching 810 units. This shows strong adoption of electric vehicles for short-distance deliveries and green logistics. However, e-rickshaw sales fell 49.4%, suggesting that the market is still adjusting to changing demand patterns and supply-side challenges.

SIAM Director General, Rajesh Menon, commented, "The government's decision to reduce GST rates on vehicles will help more people access mobility and create fresh momentum in the automotive sector, especially during the festive season."
This policy is expected to encourage more operators to switch to electric three-wheelers, further supporting India’s green mobility transition.
From April to August 2025, the three-wheeler segment performed as follows:
Total production: 1.28 crore units (4.6% growth across all vehicles)
Domestic sales: 99.80 lakh units (slight overall decline)
Exports: 25.37 lakh units (25.3% growth)
The strong export performance indicates that Indian three-wheeler manufacturers are gaining competitiveness in global markets. Bajaj Auto and other leading manufacturers continue to dominate both passenger and goods carrier segments with reliable and diverse products.
The two-wheeler segment also performed well in August 2025:
Scooter sales rose 12.7%
Motorcycle sales grew 4.3%
However, passenger vehicle sales dropped 8.8% as manufacturers reduced dispatches in anticipation of the GST cut.
With the festive season approaching and GST rates reduced, the three-wheeler market is expected to maintain strong momentum. Businesses are likely to invest more in goods carriers, while urban operators will expand passenger three-wheeler fleets.
The electric three-wheeler market may see faster adoption, making last-mile delivery more sustainable and efficient.

The Indian three-wheeler market is on a strong growth path, with robust demand in both passenger and goods segments. The GST rate reduction, combined with festive season buying, will likely drive even higher sales in the coming months. Growing adoption of electric three-wheelers signals a greener, more efficient future for last-mile mobility in India.
