Key Highlights:
• The Indian Army and IOCL signed an MoU for hydrogen fuel cell bus trials.
• The initiative highlights the Army's commitment to green transport.
• The hydrogen fuel cell bus has a seating capacity of 37 and a driving range of 250-300 km.
• Hydrogen fuel cells produce zero emissions.
• The Army is developing a Green Hydrogen Microgrid in Chushul.
The Indian army will conduct hydrogen fuel cell bus technology experiments in collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to demonstrate a strong commitment to discovering green and sustainable transportation options.
The Indian Army and the IOCL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of General Manoj Pande, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), and Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil. The Indian Army has taken another step towards promoting innovation and environmental responsibility.
The MoU highlighted the parties' commitment to promoting innovation and advancing sustainable transportation solutions in the future. The Indian Army received a hydrogen fuel cell bus during the ceremony. It begins a mutually beneficial cooperation between the Indian Army and IOCL. This bus has a seating capacity of 37 passengers and a 250-300 km mileage on a full 30 kg onboard tank of Hydrogen fuel.
This hydrogen fuel cell technology provides clean and efficient alternatives by converting hydrogen gas to power via an electrochemical process.
This process produces just water vapour as a byproduct, ensuring zero emissions. Notably, on March 21, 2023, the Indian Army became the first government institution to sign an agreement with National Thermal Power Corporation Renewable Energy Limited to install Green Hydrogen-based Microgrid Power Plants along the Northern Borders.
A pilot project is being set up in Chushul, where a 200 KW Green Hydrogen-based Microgram would offer clean electricity 24 hours a day, seven days a week to troops stationed in harsh terrain and adverse weather conditions.

Teaming up with IOCL, the Indian Army is making a big move towards eco-friendly transport. They're trying out hydrogen fuel cell tech, showing they care about cutting down on pollution and looking after the environment. This isn't just about being green; it's also about making things work better, especially in tough places.
