Key Highlights:
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has announced plans to start using locally manufactured Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries from Amara Raja Energy & Mobility. This collaboration will begin in the fourth quarter of the 2024-2025 fiscal year. With this step, Hyundai becomes the first automobile original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to adopt localised AGM battery technology.
Innovative Technology for Indian Customers
The move aligns with HMIL’s focus on localisation and introducing advanced technologies tailored for Indian customers. The Made-in-India AMARON AGM batteries have shown exceptional performance, surpassing conventional Complete Maintenance Free (CMF) batteries by 150% in real-world durability tests. These batteries also support a wider operational temperature range and promise a longer lifespan, as stated in the company’s press release.
Benefits for Next-Generation Products
Using AGM batteries will enable Hyundai to launch next-gen products designed for the Indian market. The benefits include better performance, extended range, and lower emissions, meeting the evolving needs of consumers while adhering to strict environmental standards.
Statements from Leadership
Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer of HMIL, highlighted the significance of this partnership. He said, “We are proud to be the first auto OEM in India to integrate indigenously made AGM battery technology into our products. This collaboration with Amara Raja Energy & Mobility reflects our commitment to localisation, which aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.”
Harshavardhana Gourineni, Executive Director of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, also shared insights. He said, “This partnership is a milestone for AMARON as we aim to deliver advanced energy solutions to meet the changing requirements of OEMs. These AGM batteries are designed to meet stringent Real Driving Emissions (RDE) norms, including India’s BS6 Phase 2 standards.”
Localisation and Future Plans
Hyundai is actively advancing its localisation efforts. The company is collaborating with over 194 suppliers for more than 1,238 components at its Chennai manufacturing facility. It is also implementing a strategic approach for its upcoming manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra.
AGM Battery
AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat, a type of advanced lead-acid battery. Unlike traditional lead-acid batteries, AGM batteries use a special glass mat to hold the electrolyte solution between their positive and negative plates.
This design prevents any leakage or spillage, making the battery completely sealed and maintenance-free. Since AGM batteries don’t require refilling and are spill-proof, they can be installed in any position without risk.
Their durable and leak-proof construction makes them a reliable choice for various applications, including vehicles, renewable energy systems, and backup power. Thanks to their efficient design, AGM batteries are known for better performance and longer life compared to standard batteries.
