Key Highlights

  • 1,750 electric buses approved for Bengaluru.

  • Covers about 39% of the PM E-Drive city allocation.

  • Strengthens BMTC’s electric bus network.

  • Supports India’s decarbonization goals.

  • Boosts clean and sustainable urban mobility.

EKA Mobility and Chartered Speed Limited have received official confirmation to deploy 1,750 electric buses in Bengaluru under the Government of India’s PM E-Drive Scheme. The announcement was made on Tuesday and marks a major step toward strengthening electric public transport in the city.

Nearly 40% of Bengaluru’s Electric Bus Allocation

The approved deployment accounts for around 39% of Bengaluru’s planned induction of 4,500 electric buses under the PM E-Drive Scheme. This makes it one of the largest single contributions to the city’s electric bus expansion and highlights the growing pace of public transport electrification.

Supporting Bengaluru’s Clean Mobility Goals

Bengaluru has been steadily expanding its electric bus network through the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). This effort aligns with Karnataka’s clean mobility strategy and the central government’s broader push toward decarbonization and sustainable urban transport.

Combined Strength of EKA Mobility and Chartered Speed

The project brings together the strengths of both companies.

  • EKA Mobility will contribute its electric vehicle manufacturing and technology expertise.

  • Chartered Speed Limited will manage operations, drawing on its experience of running over 2,000 buses and serving more than 3.5 lakh passengers daily across six states.

This collaboration is expected to ensure reliable and efficient electric bus services for daily commuters.

Focus on Sustainable Urban Transport

Rohit Srivastava, Business Head and Chief Growth Officer at EKA Mobility, said the deployment supports India’s electric mobility vision and the transformation of urban transport systems. He highlighted the company’s focus on building sustainable and commuter-friendly mobility solutions.

Chartered Speed’s EV Expansion Plans

Sanyam Gandhi, Whole-Time Director at Chartered Speed Limited, stated that the company plans to convert around 25% of its total fleet to electric by FY 2027. He also pointed out ongoing infrastructure investments to support electric bus operations at scale.

Safety and Technology Measures

To support electric vehicle operations, Chartered Speed has put in place several safety and reliability measures. These include preventive maintenance systems, battery health monitoring, and specialized training programs for drivers. The company also uses GPS tracking and CCTV systems to enhance passenger safety and operational efficiency.

Strong Track Record in Electric Buses

Earlier in 2025, Chartered Speed was awarded the deployment of over 1,000 electric buses under the Pradhan Mantri e-Bus Sewa Scheme, further strengthening its presence in India’s electric mobility sector.

The deployment of 1,750 electric buses by EKA Mobility and Chartered Speed marks a major boost for Bengaluru’s clean public transport journey. Covering nearly 40% of the city’s PM E-Drive allocation, the project will support lower emissions, modernize urban mobility, and improve daily commuting. It also reflects strong industry participation in India’s electric mobility mission and long-term commitment to sustainable transport solutions.
