The Delhi government upgrades public transport with UPI payments, electric buses, modern depots, and a new pollution testing center for smoother and cleaner travel.
Delhi Buses Go Digital: UPI and Card Payments Now Accepted

Key Highlights:

  • Delhi buses will now accept UPI and card payments, making travel easier without cash.
  • The new system is being tested at three depots and will not cost DTC anything for five years.
  • Electric bus use is being promoted with new charging stations and special hire rates.
  • DTC depots will be modernized with multilevel parking and better facilities, without using public money.
  • A new pollution testing center will check 72,000 vehicles yearly to help keep Delhi's air cleaner.

The Delhi government has introduced a new system for bus fares to make travel easier and cashless for passengers. Now, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses will accept payments through UPI and cards. This change means people can pay quickly and without cash when they travel by bus. This is designed to make daily bus rides faster and more convenient, while also helping the environment. And most importantly, this upgrade will not cost anything extra for the DTC to implement.

Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said the pilot program is already running at Rajghat, Hasanpur, and Kalkaji depots in collaboration with Canara Bank. He mentioned this is only the first step. Singh added that the new system will not cost DTC any money for five years. It will also reduce expenses, especially on printing tickets.

However, this technology update is just one part of a larger plan to improve Delhi's public transport system. DTC is moving forward with clean energy efforts. The government plans to set up more electric vehicle charging stations at major depots. Rajghat depot will get special attention with a Rs 5 crore fund allocated for charging facilities.

To encourage the use of electric buses, DTC will also introduce special hire rates. These e-buses will be available not only for government purposes but also for things like film shoots. So, you might soon see an electric DTC bus in your favourite movie scenes.

The government is restructuring the DTC depots' work by turning them into modern, multi-use spaces. The Banda Bahadur Marg and Sukhdev Vihar depots will be redesigned with features like multilevel parking and better use of space. The best part is that this project will fund itself without using public money. Along with upgrading the depots, DTC will launch seven new training programs for drivers, conductors, and even the public, the report said. This will help improve skills and service across the board.

Pollution Check with Precision

DTC is also setting up an advanced vehicle fitness and pollution testing center. This center aims to check around 72,000 vehicles every year to ensure they meet pollution standards. This move will help improve air quality in Delhi by making sure buses and other vehicles are cleaner and safer. From easy digital payments to more electric buses, Delhi’s transport system is getting a big upgrade. Commuters will soon experience smoother, cleaner, and more modern travel every day.
