Ashok Leyland, a manufacturer of commercial vehicles, announced that it had won a contract to provide 500 buses to the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), 75 of which had already been delivered to the island nation. SLTB is currently using more than 5,000 Ashok Leyland buses. The new Ashok Leyland buses will perform best on rural routes as well as on roads.
With 110 depots spread across the nation, Sri Lanka Transport Board is the sole state-owned bus transportation provider in Sri Lanka. It runs buses on metropolis routes, hilly and rural routes, in addition to long-distance inter-metropolis routes. Sri Lanka also houses a bus and truck manufacturing facility owned by the Hinduja group.
The company claims that these buses will support mobility and accessibility in Sri Lanka by reducing the island nation's chronically overcrowded public transportation system. According to the statement, the order is a part of a Line of Credit provided by the Export-Import Bank of India under the Indian government's Economic Assistance Scheme. However, the commercial enterprise selected to preserve the deal's monetary specifics a secret.
"It is anticipated that these brand-new 32-seater buses will be put into service on island-wide rural routes. We thank the Indian government for helping to improve Sri Lanka's public transportation system." Said Amandeep Singh, Ashok Leyland's President of International Operations
According to Ashok Leyland, the project's first batch of buses was delivered to the company in Colombo at the beginning of last month.
