JCB has reached a groundbreaking milestone with its hydrogen combustion engine, securing type approval from 11 European licensing authorities. This landmark certification paves the way for commercial sales and use of the innovative zero-emissions engine across Europe, positioning JCB as a leader in sustainable construction and agricultural technology.
As the first construction equipment company to develop a fully operational hydrogen-powered combustion engine, JCB has invested £100 million in this ambitious project. Over three years, a dedicated team of 150 engineers has worked tirelessly to bring the engine to life. Their efforts have culminated in official certification from leading authorities, enabling the engine's deployment in construction and agricultural machinery.
The Netherlands’s Vehicle Authority RDW was the first to grant approval, followed by certification from authorities in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Finland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Additional countries are expected to approve the technology throughout 2025, further expanding its reach.
JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford, who spearheaded the hydrogen engine initiative, expressed his pride and optimism:
"This is a very significant moment for JCB. To start the new year with certification in so many European countries bodes well for the future of hydrogen combustion technology. JCB has proven that this is a viable zero-emissions solution for construction and agricultural equipment. Most of all, I am thrilled for our British engineering team, who have worked tirelessly to reach this stage."
JCB has already produced over 130 prototype engines, which are being evaluated in backhoe loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers, and generator sets. Advanced real-world testing on customer sites is progressing successfully, demonstrating the engine's capability and reliability in practical applications.
The hydrogen engine represents a zero-emissions alternative to traditional fuels, addressing environmental challenges without compromising performance. This development aligns with the growing demand for sustainable solutions in heavy machinery industries.
This certification marks the beginning of a new chapter in green innovation for JCB. With Europe leading the way, the approval sets the stage for the hydrogen combustion engine's broader adoption globally. As more countries follow suit, JCB is well-positioned to revolutionize the future of sustainable machinery.
By combining engineering excellence and a commitment to reducing environmental impact, JCB is setting a benchmark in the transition to zero-emissions technology.
