Key Highlights

  • Biofuel blending in diesel to begin with construction machines.

  • Construction equipment uses 3–4% of India’s diesel.

  • Diesel consumption is double that of petrol, making blending crucial.

  • The government aims to cut oil imports and pollution levels.

  • Industry leaders and ministries support the initiative.

India is preparing to start blending biofuels in diesel for heavy construction equipment such as cranes, bulldozers, and large carriers. This move targets a sector that consumes a significant share of diesel and will help reduce crude oil imports while cutting pollution levels.

Focus on the Construction Equipment Sector

Construction equipment in India uses about 3–4% of the country’s annual diesel consumption, which is nearly 91 million tonnes. Starting biofuel blending here could deliver a quick impact before extending it to other sectors.

India has already achieved 20% ethanol blending in petrol. Since diesel consumption is more than double that of petrol, targeting construction vehicles is seen as a strategic step toward achieving the country’s clean energy goals.

Government Push and Industry Support

Officials confirmed that work on biofuel blending in diesel for construction vehicles has already started, with discussions between two key ministries. The plan also supports India’s twin goals of reducing dependence on imported crude oil and boosting farmers’ income by producing crop-based fuels.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the potential, pointing out that the 400-crore litres of diesel used by construction vehicles present a major opportunity for blending biofuels.

Industry leaders are also backing the initiative. Deepak Shetty, CEO and MD of JCB India, said, “We view these developments positively, as they align with our commitment to sustainable innovation and India’s broader goals of reducing pollution, cutting fossil fuel imports, and advancing towards net-zero emissions.”

Impact and Concerns

India’s ethanol blending program has already saved foreign exchange worth ₹1.44 lakh crore and replaced 245 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil. The same approach in the diesel segment is expected to bring similar benefits.

However, some concerns remain regarding vehicle performance with blended fuels. A joint statement from ARAI, FIPI, and SIAM addressed these doubts, saying mileage concerns were “misplaced” and depended more on factors such as driving habits and vehicle condition than on blended fuels.

India’s decision to begin biofuel blending in diesel for construction vehicles is a step toward energy security and cleaner fuel use. With strong government push and industry support, the move will reduce oil imports, boost farmer income, and cut emissions. Despite some concerns, experts believe blended diesel will perform well and help India meet its green goals.
