Unseasonal rain, hailstorms, and strong winds in April have caused significant damage to crops across Uttar Pradesh. Standing and harvested crops like wheat, mustard, and gram have been badly affected. In many districts, waterlogging has led to crops lodging (falling on the ground), resulting in grain damage and quality loss. While the situation is worrying, timely action can help farmers minimize losses effectively.
The impact of unseasonal rain has been highest on mature wheat and mustard crops. In several areas, crops were ready for harvest but got flattened due to heavy rain and wind. Harvested crops lying in the fields were also damaged due to excess moisture. Pulses like gram, lentils, and peas have also suffered losses.
The agriculture department has issued important guidelines to help farmers protect their crops:
1. Handling Standing Crops: If standing crops have been soaked, allow them to dry naturally for 1–2 days. Avoid immediate harvesting, as wet grains may spoil and reduce quality.
2. Managing Harvested Crops: If crops have already been harvested and are lying in the field, ensure water does not accumulate. Tie them into bundles and place them upright so that air circulation helps reduce moisture.
3. Check Moisture Before Storage: Before storing crops, make sure moisture content is below 10%. Excess moisture can lead to fungal growth and spoilage during storage.
Dry wet crops properly under sunlight and good airflow
Ensure crops are completely dry before storage
Avoid storing damp produce to prevent fungal damage
After rainfall, incidents of fire in fields and threshing areas have also been reported. Farmers should remain cautious:
Do not use cigarettes, bidis, or any flammable items near fields
Keep dry crop residues away from fire sources
High moisture levels after rain can increase the risk of pests and diseases, especially in vegetable and horticulture crops. Farmers should monitor their fields and apply the right pesticides if needed.
If crops have been damaged, farmers should inform the agriculture department or local authorities within 72 hours. Timely reporting increases the chances of receiving government assistance.
The government has started field surveys in the most affected districts. Officials are assessing the damage, and farmers have been assured that financial aid and necessary support will be provided after proper evaluation.
