The Sondwa project is part of the government’s efforts to ensure sufficient water reaches every farm. It uses modern micro-irrigation techniques like drip and sprinkler systems, which will maximize water use efficiency and help conserve water. The project is expected to boost agricultural production and strengthen the state’s agriculture-based economy.
In addition to Sondwa, the foundation stones for two other major projects, the Ken-Betwa Link Project and Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal Link Project, will be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25. These projects aim to address the water and irrigation needs of Bundelkhand and Malwa regions.
The primary goal of the Sondwa Micro Irrigation Project is to ensure a reliable supply of water for farmers, enhancing agricultural productivity and improving farmers’ incomes. By using micro-irrigation, the project will irrigate a larger area with less water.
Additionally, the project aims to boost the overall rural economy by enabling farmers to grow more crops, which will help them earn better profits.
The availability of water from the Narmada River under this project will make farming more reliable for farmers in 169 villages. According to officials, the state is already providing irrigation to 50 lakh hectares of farmland, and this project will contribute to the state’s goal of 1 crore hectares of irrigated land by 2028-29.
The Sondwa project is just one of many initiatives to improve irrigation in Madhya Pradesh. For example, the government has signed agreements with neighboring states for the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal link project, which will provide irrigation facilities to farmers in 13 districts and drinking water to local residents.

The state government has allocated over ₹24,290 crores for the Ken-Betwa Link Project, which will include a 221-kilometer-long canal to carry water from the Ken River. This project will irrigate 8.11 lakh hectares of farmland and provide drinking water to over 44 lakh people in 2,013 villages.
Similarly, other projects like the Chitrangi Pressurized Micro Irrigation Project (₹1,320 crores) and the Jawad-Neemuch Pressurized Micro Irrigation Project (₹4,197 crores) are also under development. These projects will ensure irrigation for thousands of hectares in Singrauli, Neemuch, and other areas.
With these irrigation projects, the Madhya Pradesh government aims to solve water shortages, improve crop yields, and enhance farmers’ incomes. The focus on modern irrigation techniques like sprinklers and drip systems will ensure sustainable and efficient water usage, securing the future of agriculture in the state.
For farmers, the Sondwa Micro Irrigation Project marks a hopeful beginning, ensuring their fields remain fertile and their livelihoods stable.

Alongside major projects like Ken-Betwa and Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal links, it highlights the government’s commitment to addressing water scarcity and boosting agriculture. These efforts will strengthen the rural economy and ensure sustainable growth for the state’s farming community.
