What Is the Small Nursery Scheme?

The Small Nursery Scheme provides financial support to establish nurseries for fruit plants, flowering plants, shade-tolerant plants, and medicinal plants. It can be started on a small scale as a side activity or developed into a full-fledged small business.

Because of its low investment requirement and simple process, the scheme is becoming popular among people who want to earn from agriculture-related activities without large risks.

Why the Government Launched This Scheme

Agriculture is the main livelihood in Bihar, but dependence on traditional crops like rice and wheat often limits farmers income. Through this scheme, the government wants farmers to adopt horticulture and plant production as alternative income sources.

The aim is to increase plant availability, support green initiatives, and help rural families earn more throughout the year.

Key Benefits for Farmers and Common People

The Small Nursery Scheme offers multiple benefits at different levels:

  • Low-cost employment: Nursery setup needs limited capital.

  • Income from home: Can be started on 5–10 decimal land or even in a home courtyard.

  • Government support: Training, saplings, and subsidy are provided.

  • Women and youth empowerment: Ideal for women SHGs and unemployed youth.

  • Environmental benefits: More plants mean more greenery and less pollution.

Subsidy Details Under the Small Nursery Scheme

The government has fixed the project cost at ₹20 lakh per hectare. Beneficiaries will receive a 50% subsidy, with a maximum limit of ₹10 lakh per hectare.

The subsidy will be released in two installments:

  • First installment: 60% (₹6 lakh)

  • Second installment: 40% (₹4 lakh)

The amount will be transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

  • Government nurseries under the District Garden or Forest Department

  • Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) for high-quality plants

  • Block or Panchayat-level centers, where government supplies are available in many areas

How to Set Up a Small Nursery

Starting a nursery under this scheme involves a few simple steps:

  • Select a location: Courtyard, unused land, or a corner of a field

  • Choose suitable plants: Mango, guava, lemon, papaya, rose, marigold, basil, and others

  • Planting: Use polybags or pots for seeds and saplings

  • Maintenance: Regular watering, light fertilizer use, and proper shade

  • Selling: Plants can be sold in local markets or supplied to government schemes

How to Apply for the Small Nursery Scheme

The application process is fully online. Interested applicants can apply through the Bihar Horticulture Directorate’s official website.

Online application steps:

  1. Visit horticulture.bihar.gov.in

  2. Click on the option “Setting up a Small Nursery.”

  3. Fill in the required details and upload the necessary documents

  4. After district-level verification, the subsidy will be released to eligible applicants

The last date to apply is January 25, 2026.

A Golden Opportunity to Increase Income

The Small Nursery Scheme is a strong income-boosting opportunity for farmers and the general public in Bihar. With minimal land, basic care, and government support, nursery farming can become a stable and sustainable business. Interested individuals should apply before the deadline and contact their district horticulture department for further guidance.
