Government Offers 50% Subsidy on Weed Control Medicines for Farmers

Key Highlights

  • UP govt offers 50% subsidy on weedicides for Kharif 2025.

  • Subsidy is available at the Agriculture Protection Units.

  • Helps reduce losses from weeds, insects, and diseases.

  • Recommended chemicals provided for major Kharif crops.

  • Farmers can contact experts for guidance on weed control.

To support farmers and improve crop yield in the Kharif 2025 season, the Uttar Pradesh Government has launched a 50% subsidy scheme on weedicide and crop protection chemicals. This move aims to reduce production costs and help farmers protect their crops from weeds, pests, and diseases effectively.

Weeds compete with crops for nutrients, water, sunlight, and space. They also attract pests and diseases, which reduce overall crop yield. By providing financial assistance for buying weed control chemicals, the government is making it easier for farmers to ensure healthy crop growth and better income.

Why Weed Control is Important in Agriculture

During the Kharif season, the growth of unwanted plants (weeds) increases rapidly due to high monsoon rainfall. These weeds severely affect crops like paddy, maize, pigeon pea, urad, and moong by:

  • Stealing essential nutrients and sunlight

  • Reducing water availability

  • Spreading pests and diseases

Without timely weed control, crops suffer and yields drop significantly. Hence, using weed control medicines is crucial for disease-free and quality crop production.

Types of Weeds Found in Fields

According to the Agriculture Department, farmers usually face three major types of weeds during the Kharif season:

  1. Narrow-leaf Weeds – Grass family with long, thin leaves

  2. Broad-leaf Weeds – Dicot plants with wide leaves

  3. Motha Class (Cyperus) – A perennial weed, very hard to control due to deep tubers in the soil

These weeds must be managed based on their type, growth pattern, and resistance to seasonal changes.

Where to Get Subsidized Weedicides

Farmers can buy essential weed control chemicals at 50% subsidized rates from the Agricultural Protection Units operated by the Department of Agriculture. These centers provide all necessary agrochemicals and expert advice to help farmers manage weeds efficiently.

Farmers are encouraged to visit their nearest center for assistance in weed control and selection of the right chemicals for their crops.

Crop Losses Due to Weeds, Insects, and Diseases

As per the Department of Agriculture:

  • Weeds cause 32-35% crop loss annually

  • Insects cause 27% crop damage

  • Diseases account for 18-20% of the loss

  • Other factors contribute to 5% of the total crop damage

This data highlights the urgent need for timely weed management to maximize productivity.

Best Practices for Weed Control

To control weeds in Kharif crops like rice, maize, pigeon pea, urad, and moong, farmers should adopt the following methods:

  • Land preparation through deep plowing in summer

  • Crop rotation and puddling in paddy fields

  • Manual tools like a hoe, a spade, a mulcher, or a weeder

  • Chemical weedicides, if other practices are not sufficient

Chemical weed control is considered more effective and cost-friendly in most cases.

Recommended Weed Control Chemicals

1. Rice (Direct Sowing)

  • Pendimethalin 30 EC – 1300 ml/acre in 200L water (Spray after sowing)

  • After 20-25 days:

    • Vispirivac Sodium 10 SL – 80 ml/acre in 120L water

    • Pyrizosulfuron – 80 ml/acre in 120L water

    • Bensulfuran Methyl – 60 gm/hectare

    • Metasulfuran Methyl – 08 gm/hectare

2. Transplanted Rice

Spray within 3-5 days of transplanting using 500L water/hectare:

  • Protilachlor 50% EC – 1.6L/hectare

  • Pyrazosulfuron Ethyl 10% WP – 0.15 kg/hectare

  • Vispirivac Sodium 10% SC – 0.20L/hectare (15–20 days after transplant)

3. Maize

  • Atrazine – 2.0 kg/hectare in 500L water (Spray immediately after sowing or 2 days before germination)

4. Pigeon Pea (Arhar)

  • Pendimethalin 30 EC – 2.5 to 3.0L/hectare (Immediately after sowing)

  • Imazetha – 1.0L/hectare (15–25 days after sowing)

5. Urad and Moong (Black gram & Green gram)

  • Imazayapar 10 EC – 1.0L/hectare (10–20 days after sowing)

  • Metolachlor 50 EC – 2.0L/hectare (Spray within 2 days of sowing in 500L water)
