Sugarcane Prices Raised Twice This Year

Earlier in 2024, the Bihar government had increased sugarcane prices by ₹10 per quintal. Now, with the additional ₹10 increase, the total price hike reaches ₹20 within a single season. The Chief Minister emphasized that this decision was made after listening to the concerns of sugarcane farmers, many of whom had expressed dissatisfaction with the earlier rates.

How Bihar Compares with Other States

Here’s a look at sugarcane prices in key sugarcane-producing states:

  • Punjab: ₹391 per quintal
  • Haryana: ₹386 per quintal
  • Bihar: ₹375 per quintal
  • Uttarakhand: ₹375 per quintal
  • Uttar Pradesh: ₹355 per quintal

Despite the recent increase in prices, farmers in Uttar Pradesh are still receiving the lowest rates among major sugarcane-producing states. Meanwhile, Punjab tops the list with ₹391 per quintal, followed by Haryana at ₹386 per quintal.

Central Government’s Role in Sugarcane Pricing

The Central Government has set the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane at ₹340 per quintal for the financial year 2024–25. This FRP is the minimum rate that sugar mills must pay farmers across the country. However, state governments have the authority to set higher prices to further benefit farmers, as seen in Bihar, Punjab, and Haryana.

Benefits for Bihar Farmers

The latest price hike in Bihar will particularly benefit farmers by:

  • Increasing their overall income.
  • Encouraging higher sugarcane production.
  • Strengthening the sugarcane industry in the state.

Farmers in Bihar are optimistic about the government’s proactive measures and hope for continued support to ensure long-term growth and prosperity.
