AI reduces per-acre farming cost.
Helps detect crop diseases early.
3,000–4,000 FPOs active in Vidarbha.
UP connects 10+ lakh farmers to AI.
AI boosts governance, DBT, and land mapping.
At the 16th Agro Vision Agricultural Exhibition in Nagpur, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari highlighted how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can transform Indian agriculture. He said that adopting AI will not only increase crop production but also reduce the overall cost of farming. Gadkari encouraged farmers to use modern technology and work in groups through Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs) to gain maximum benefit.
Speaking to the media, Gadkari shared a simple example to show how AI can reduce farming costs.
If a farmer spends ₹5,000 per acre, using AI-based solutions can bring this cost down to ₹3,500.
Even after adding an extra ₹500 for AI technology, farmers still save ₹1,000 per acre.
He said that this direct saving will help farmers increase their income and make farming more profitable.
Gadkari explained that AI is very useful in detecting crop diseases and pest attacks before they spread. AI tools can help identify problems in crops like oranges, pigeon peas, sugarcane, and many others. This year’s Agro Vision Exhibition focused on the theme “AI with Agriculture”, helping farmers understand new technologies easily.
Gadkari also said that when farmers adopt technology collectively, the benefits are much higher. In the Vidarbha region, around 3,000 to 4,000 Farmer-Producer Companies (FPOs) are active and helping farmers adopt AI-based models. He urged more farmers to join FPOs for better income and growth.
The Agro Vision exhibition aims to reduce farmer suicides in Vidarbha and provide them access to modern tools. This year:
450+ organizations participated, including leading agri-companies, MNCs, research institutes, government agencies, banks, and startups.
Lakhs of farmers, scientists, and experts attended the event.
Farmers learned about AI tools, modern equipment, and new farming models that can improve productivity and reduce risks.
Uttar Pradesh has become one of the leading states in using AI for farming. Under the World Bank-supported “UP Agris” project, more than 10 lakh farmers have received AI-based farm advice. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made technology a key part of governance and expanded its use across the state.
UP’s AI-driven agriculture system uses:
Satellite imagery
Soil analysis
Weather forecasting
RFID-based tracking
These tools help farmers increase yields, manage resources wisely, and predict risks accurately. Lucknow is developing rapidly as India’s first fully AI-enabled city, with advanced infrastructure to support modern farming and governance.
The Uttar Pradesh government has established an AI Innovation Hub that provides:
Supercomputing with 10,000+ GPUs
Multilingual AI models
Research and development support for global AI companies
Policy framework aligned with the India AI Mission
This is helping create a strong foundation for India’s AI growth.
AI is also improving governance in Uttar Pradesh by:
Creating accurate beneficiary databases
Preventing fraud
Speeding up Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)
Ensuring schemes reach the right people
AI is being used for land dispute resolution, illegal mining monitoring, digital land mapping, and district-level tracking. This has increased transparency and improved the efficiency of government services.
From Nagpur’s Agro Vision to Uttar Pradesh’s AI adoption, India is moving rapidly towards digital agriculture and smart governance. AI promises higher production, lower costs, better profits, and sustainable farming practices. The future of Indian agriculture is set to become more technology-driven, efficient, and farmer-friendly.

AI is transforming Indian agriculture by reducing costs, increasing production, and improving efficiency. From Nagpur’s Agro Vision to Uttar Pradesh’s large-scale adoption, AI is helping farmers detect diseases early, manage resources better, and benefit from precision farming. With FPOs, innovation hubs, and government support, farmers can earn more while reducing risks. India is now moving quickly toward smart, sustainable, and technology-driven agriculture for a stronger rural economy.
