Farming has seen a significant transformation with the advent of agricultural machinery. These machines have enabled Indian farmers to cultivate crops across all three seasons: Rabi, Kharif, and Zaid. The use of agricultural machinery has played a crucial role in making India self-sufficient in food grains. To support farmers in adopting modern techniques, both the central and state governments have subsidized over 15 lakh agricultural equipment in recent years. These include various machines like tractors, rotavators, cultivators, combine harvesters, and more.
Under the Agricultural Mechanization Sub-Mission (SMAM), farmers are provided with subsidies ranging from 50 to 80 percent on various agricultural equipment. This initiative aims to enhance productivity and efficiency in farming practices.
The Agriculture Ministry reported that over 15.75 lakh agricultural machines have been subsidized since the inception of the SMAM scheme nearly a decade ago. Additionally, thousands of Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs), Hi-Tech Hubs, and Farm Machinery Banks have been established nationwide to facilitate equipment access for farmers. Andhra Pradesh leads the way with the highest number of CHCs, while Punjab tops the list in terms of machines distributed, followed by Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

The use of agricultural machinery not only boosts productivity but also reduces the overall cost of farming. These machines increase production and efficiency, leading to higher incomes for farmers. Studies show that agricultural mechanization can enhance productivity by 12-34 percent, while specific machines like seed cum fertilizer drills can save seeds and fertilizers by 20 percent and increase cropping intensity by 05-12 percent.
Apart from regular farming equipment, the government also provides subsidies for machines used in stubble management. These include devices like Happy Seeder, Mulcher, Zero Till Seed Drill, and Rotavator. Since 2018-19, nearly 3 lakh machines have been distributed in states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi to help farmers manage stubble effectively.
Farmers interested in availing subsidies for agricultural equipment can apply online through the official website of the SMAM scheme. Subsidies ranging from 50 to 80 percent are available for the purchase of modern agricultural machinery, aiding farmers in adopting advanced farming techniques.
