ZF has started the development of a regenerative braking system for Tevva's 7.5t battery-electric truck. The company partnered with Tevva engineers on the project to install its Electronic Brake System (EBS) in its zero-emission electric trucks.

Tevva engineers fulfilled a variety of strict testing standards for the company's vehicle, fine-tuning its control unit (VCU) and improving compatibility with the EBS. As a result, the system becomes four times more efficient than a traditional compressed air brake system and it maximises the Tevva truck's range.

EBS enables the safe incorporation of regenerative braking up to 180 kW, whereas the conventional air brake system limited passive regen to roughly 40 kW due to safety concerns. The customized system was tested at the ZF test track in Jeversen, Germany, under a variety of situations, grades, and surface types.

Modern EBS systems can control the blending of friction braking with the e-motor. This reduces the probability of brake wear and tear. The technology electronically transmits the driver's deceleration request to all braking system components, reducing response time, balancing brake forces, and providing ease of braking and efficient brake management.

'Our comprehensive product portfolio and systems competence, including ZF's standardised Electronic Braking System, provides faster time-to-market for new, innovative market participants such as Tevva,' stated Heiko Eggers, Head, EMEA Application Engineering for Braking and ADAS, Commercial Vehicle Solutions, ZF.

According to Uzair Jilani, Lead Engineer, Drive and Brake Systems, Tevva, the system has been developed for use with the truck manufacturer's regenerative system; when the brake pedal is pressed, most of the 'braking' is handled by regenerative, which means that the drive system slows the vehicle down.

This year, mass manufacturing of Tevva's 7.5t battery-electric vehicle began at the company's London factory. This will be followed by a 7.5t hydrogen-electric truck with a hydrogen range-extender that increases vehicle range to 354 miles (570 km). The Tevva BEV can go up to 227 kilometers on a single charge This makes it perfect for last-mile and urban delivery fleets.
