Volvo Trucks is currently deploying various new safety technologies for its trucks, aiming to increase the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. These safety features will make drivers' jobs easier.

The new features are Front Short Range Assist, Tire Pressure Monitoring Device, Intelligent Speed Assist, and Door Opening Alert.

According to Volvo, some new features have already been created to meet or even exceed the EU's upgraded safety legislation. The General Safety Regulation (GSR), will go into force in July 2024.

GSR, which requires various modern driving support systems, aims to improve road safety and protect drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. The EU predicts that by enacting the legislation, it will save over 25,000 lives and save 140 000 injuries by 2038.

"We support tougher safety regulations, and Volvo Trucks already offers the other systems that will become mandatory in 2024 with GSR," says Wrige Berling, Volvo Trucks' Traffic & Product Safety Director.

Volvo Trucks' new safety features include:

Short-Range Front Assist

To determine if someone is in front of the truck, a front radar and camera are used. The system notifies the driver with a visual and audible indication if a collision is imminent.

Intelligent Acceleration Assist

This feature keeps the driver informed about speed limits by sensing road speed signs and displaying the restriction on the instrument panel. The technology displays the speed limit for the specific vehicle combination and notifies the driver with visual and audible alarms if the speed limit is exceeded.

Door Opening Alert

This device will alert the driver if a moving object, such as a pedestrian, cyclist, or car, approaches from behind in the monitored region, which is located on the same side of the truck where the door is opened. It will be available on both sides of the truck, The mechanism is activated when the truck comes to a complete stop and for two minutes after the engine or motor is turned off.

Tire Pressure Monitoring Device

The tire pressure on the truck and trailer is monitored by this technology. According to the new GSR standard, if the pressure drops 20% below the reference pressure, the driver should be notified via the driver display.

The Volvo device goes above and beyond the legal requirements by allowing the driver to be notified even before the stipulated 20% pressure decrease. The device can detect a wide variety of under and over-pressure readings. Furthermore, maintaining optimal tire pressure results in increased energy efficiency.

Auto Hold

The Auto Hold feature assists the driver on slopes and hills by keeping the truck stationary until the accelerator is pushed.

Intelligent Speed Assist

Intelligent Speed Assist will be offered in most regions, while the other features will be accessible internationally beginning in September on the Volvo FH, FM, and FMX with diesel, gas, and electric drivelines. Volvo FL and FE trucks will receive the safety systems as part of GSR upgrades by the end of 2023.

Volvo is constantly developing and introducing new safety systems that can enhance the driver's capabilities, thereby protecting both the driver and the people with whom they share the road.

The long-term objective of Volvo Trucks is zero accidents; safety is at the heart of everything. With these new systems, the company will take important steps toward achieving these goals.
