Volvo Trucks became the first global truck manufacturer to begin series production of heavy-duty electric 44-tonne trucks in September of this year. Some of the electric trucks will also be the world's first trucks to be built with fossil-free steel. Volvo Trucks is committed to the Paris Climate Agreement and to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain by 2040.

The main aim of Volvo company is to make net-zero emissions trucks which include both making vehicles fossil-free in operation and gradually replacing the materials in trucks with fossil-free and recycled alternatives.

The Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB produces fossil-free steel with a completely new technology that uses fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. As a result, the climate impact is significantly reduced, and this is an important step toward a net-zero emissions value chain. Amazon, DFDS, and Unilever are among the customers who will use fossil-free steel in some of their electric trucks.

"At Amazon, we are on track to have all of our operations carbon-neutral by 2040. We need partners like Volvo to make this transition possible," says Andreas Marschner, Amazon's Vice President of Transportation Services in Europe.

"DFDS is committed to our green transition and to providing more environmentally friendly transportation and logistics solutions. Any step forward in the green transition of logistics brings us closer to a carbon-free society, and we are pleased to learn that some of our new electric trucks, which will be delivered soon, are also made with fossil-free steel," says Niklas Andersson, EVP of DFDS Logistics Division.

The first hydrogen-produced steel is used in the electric truck's frame rails, which serve as the truck's backbone and support all other major components. As fossil-free steel becomes more widely available, it will be used in other parts of the truck.

Do you know Volvo trucks can be recycled?

90% of Volvo truck parts can be recycled.

Today, around 30% of the materials in a new Volvo truck are recycled. Furthermore, at the end of its life, up to 90% of the truck can be recycled. The addition of fossil-free steel to the traditional and recycled steel used in Volvo trucks will be significant.
