Volvo Trucks has increased the output of its electric trucks and begun serial manufacturing of big battery electric trucks at its Ghent factory in Belgium.

In a significant step towards sustainable transportation, Volvo Trucks has announced its expansion of electric truck manufacturing by opening a fourth factory in Belgium. This move reinforces Volvo's commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the commercial transport sector and accelerating the global transition to electric vehicles
Volvo Trucks has increased the output of its electric trucks and begun serial manufacturing of big battery electric trucks at its Ghent factory in Belgium. This means that Volvo electric trucks are now manufactured in four factories, three in Europe and one in the United States.
In Ghent, three different electric trucks will be produced: the Volvo FH, the Volvo FM, and the Volvo FMX Electric. These trucks have a total weight of 44 tonnes and can be customized to meet different transportation demands.
The Ghent facility is Volvo Trucks' largest production site, with a yearly capacity of around 45,000 trucks. The electric trucks are built on the same platform and line as the diesel and gas-powered trucks, in a production setup that allows the factory to handle a wide range of modifications and requests. The battery packs are supplied by the recently opened battery assembly plant in Ghent, which is positioned directly adjacent to the production line.
Ghent is Volvo Vehicles' fourth facility to produce battery electric vehicles. The first to go was Blainville, France, where Volvo began manufacturing electric vehicles for garbage collection and city distribution in 2019.
A year later, the plant in New River Valley, Virginia, began serial manufacture of the VNR Electric, which was designed for regional transportation. Then, as the first worldwide manufacturer, Volvo Trucks placed its heaviest range into serial production at the Tuve facility in Sweden last year, marking a key milestone.

Volvo Vehicles has received orders, including letters of intent to buy, for around 6,000 electric vehicles in 42 countries across six continents.
One of the key highlights of this expansion is the integration of sustainable manufacturing practices throughout the production process. Volvo Trucks has invested heavily in sustainable technologies and processes, aiming to make this factory one of the most environmentally friendly in the automotive industry.
This includes using renewable energy sources, optimizing logistics to minimize emissions, and implementing circular economy principles to reduce waste. The decision to expand in Belgium also underscores the importance of the European market for Volvo Trucks.
Europe has been at the forefront of embracing electric mobility, with many countries offering incentives and infrastructure to support electric vehicles. By increasing its manufacturing capacity in the region, Volvo can better cater to the growing demand for electric trucks and contribute to the EU's ambitious goals of carbon neutrality.
Furthermore, Volvo's investment in electric truck manufacturing aligns with the broader trend in the transportation industry towards electrification. Electric trucks not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also lower operating costs for businesses. With advances in battery technology and charging infrastructure, electric trucks are becoming a more viable and economical choice for fleet operators.
In conclusion, Volvo's expansion of its electric truck manufacturing footprint to a fourth factory in Belgium is a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable transportation. This move not only strengthens Volvo's position as a leader in electric trucks but also demonstrates its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of commercial transportation.
As the world continues to prioritize sustainability and cleaner energy solutions, Volvo's Ghent factory will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the electric truck industry.
