Toyota and VDL Groep have launched their first hydrogen fuel cell demonstration vehicle, which was created as part of a collaboration announced in May of last year.

Toyota and VDL Groep have launched their first hydrogen fuel cell demonstration vehicle, which was created as part of a collaboration announced in May of last year. This initial demo vehicle will be tested on the road to identify areas for improvement in preparation for the next stage of the program. VDL Groep is preparing four more fuel cell vehicles for Toyota logistics partners VOS Transport Group, CEVA, Groupe CAT, and Yusen.
These companies will contribute to the project by employing hydrogen trucks on their regular routes in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Each of the four routes has at least one hydrogen refuelling station (HRS), as well as backup resources if necessary.
All parties' collaboration is expected to consolidate knowledge on how to deploy fuel cell trucks on public highways and contribute to Europe's green energy transition. The five-year study is planned to encourage further development of a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure across Europe that meets AFIR (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation) requirements, allowing for the emergence of more carbon-neutral hydrogen transportation alternatives.

The project complements Toyota's decarbonization programs and contributes to the company's aim of becoming carbon-neutral by 2040.
