Did you know that lithium is the sole metal born from the Big Bang?

Did you know that lithium is the sole metal born from the Big Bang?

The Geological Survey of India discovered a 5.9-million-tonne reserve of lithium, a critical mineral for the production of electric vehicles and solar panels, in the Reasi district of J&K. More than half of the world's lithium is found in Australia as a solid mineral in rock and clay deposits, as well as dissolved in brine. Only 18% of the total lithium available is currently accessible.

A senior government official said that India's first lithium reserve, discovered in Jammu and Kashmir, is of the highest quality, as upbeat villagers expressed hope for a bright future.

During the meeting, Shri Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary, Ministry of Mines and Chairman CGPB, congratulated GSI on fulfilling the Central Government's commitment to auction 500 blocks by submitting 287 geological memoranda and 195 G2&G3 reports to the state government since 2015.

As we all know EV industry is on the boom. So, lithium is a critical factor for the EV industry. Lithium is primarily used in the production of EV batteries. Demand for lithium is increasing as the government promotes the use of electric vehicles. It is also used for storage utilities in the electricity department.

The Indian government has approved the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) for the production of Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC) in the country. The plan's budget is 18,100 crores for a five-year period. More reserves are expected to be discovered in the future.

The proposed Annual Programme for the upcoming Field Season 2023-2024 was presented and discussed at the meeting. The GSI will undertake 966 programs in the coming season, including 318 mineral exploration projects and 12 marine investigation projects.

Three fascinating facts about lithium used in the production of batteries for electric vehicles (EV):

  1. Lithium is the lightest metal and the only metal to have formed as a result of the Big Bang. It causes an ignitable reaction with water that is hot enough to burn flesh.

  2. Because it is the least dense metal, it is dominant in the battery materials market for the highest energy storage capacity per kilogram. It is primarily used in ceramics and glass, greases, pharmaceutical compounds, air conditioners, and aluminium production.

  3. Unlike lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries can be discharged to around 10% capacity and recharged and discharged thousands of times without failure.
