The Agriculture Department is urging farmers in the State to switch to solar-powered agriculture pumps to save on electricity bills and save environment. This is a response to the looming threat of power supply disconnection by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) due to unpaid bills by farmers. The Agriculture Minister, P. Prasad, stressed the need to educate farmers about the pros of using solar-powered pump sets.
Farmers in the State are facing the risk of losing electricity supply, as the KSEB has warned to disconnect power due to pending bills. To tackle this problem, the Agriculture Department has initiated steps to inform farmers about the advantages of 'solarising' their agriculture pump sets.
As per an existing government scheme, farmers get free electricity, and the Agriculture Department pays the bills. However, the unpaid bills have created a crisis, leading to discussions between Agriculture Minister P. Prasad and Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty. The aim is to stop the KSEB from cutting off electricity supply to farmers.
To assure the farming community, Minister Prasad has promised that the subsidized electricity supply will not be affected. In addition to this, to achieve this, the Agriculture Department is advocating the use of solar-powered pump sets as an alternative and sustainable solution. The PM-KUSUM project of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), facilitated by the Agency for New & Renewable Energy Research & Technology, has been launched in the State.
The PM-KUSUM project is a national-level initiative to 'solarise' existing agricultural pumps and replace diesel generator-powered agrarian pump sets. By using solar energy, farmers can reduce their reliance on conventional electricity sources and help preserve the environment.
Solar-powered pump sets offer several benefits to farmers, such as a significant reduction in electricity bills, increased energy efficiency, and a lower environmental impact. The Agriculture Department's efforts to create awareness about these benefits aim to enable farmers to make informed decisions about adopting sustainable agricultural practices.
The use of solar-powered agriculture pump sets is in line with wider efforts to promote renewable energy and sustainable farming practices. It not only addresses the immediate challenge of electricity bill payments but also positions farmers as key contributors to the country's renewable energy goals.
In conclusion, the Agriculture Department's proactive steps to promote solar-powered pump sets show a commitment to the well-being of farmers and the environment. By adopting sustainable practices, farmers in the State can look forward to a brighter and more energy-efficient future.
