Roopam Singh, who has a post-graduate degree in development planning and Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Fisheries, decided to make a mark in the traditionally male-dominated sector of fish farming business in India. After gaining valuable experience through several years of work in her field of study, Singh took a bold step into entrepreneurship in 2019.
Her journey into fish farming was not just a career move; it was a leap inspired by the resilience and tenacity of rural women she encountered during a visit to Rajasthan. Despite facing limitations in education, these women were actively engaged in business, leaving a lasting impression on Singh.
Motivated by their stories, she decided to carve her path in the agricultural sector. Today, she stands as a testament to the potential of 'Girl Power' in agriculture, inspiring others with her dedication and success.
Originally planning to start fish farming in Delhi, Roopam Singh faced high setup costs in the city. Returning to Kashipur, Uttarakhand, she partnered with a relative to kickstart her venture in their pond. After a year, she ventured independently by leasing a pond. Roopam owns 3 acres, with two ponds, yielding an annual fish production of around 750 quintals, resulting in profits ranging from 15 to 20 lakh rupees.
She advises fellow farmers to focus on the 'Pangasius' species for higher profits, emphasizing preparation before monsoon and timely market selling for increased production and profits.
