Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and Tribal Affairs, Arjun Munda, inaugurated the Framework for Voluntary Carbon Market in Agriculture Sector and Accreditation Protocol of Agroforestry Nurseries on January 29 in Delhi. It is an important step towards promoting sustainable agricultural practices and providing economic benefits to small and medium farmers. The event was attended by Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Dr Himanshu Pathak (Secretary of DARE and Director General of ICAR), and senior officials from Central and State Ministries and various organizations related to agriculture. Several stakeholders also joined the program virtually.
Promoting Carbon Credit Benefits for Farmers
Speaking at the event, Minister Arjun Munda highlighted the Ministry's efforts to develop a framework to promote the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) in the agricultural sector. The main goal is to encourage small and medium farmers to participate in carbon credit programs. This initiative not only offers economic advantages for farmers but also aims to speed up the adoption of environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Minister Munda called for collaborative efforts from the central and State ministries and other relevant organizations to support the growth of the carbon market, stressing the importance of focusing on the needs and preferences of farmers in the southern regions.
Enhancing Agricultural Contribution to the Economy
Recognizing the significant role of the agriculture sector in India's economy, Arjun Munda highlighted its contribution to the livelihoods of millions. With 54.6% of the country's workforce engaged in agriculture and allied activities, the sector accounts for 18.6% of the GDP, covering a sown area of 139.3 million hectares. In line with the sustainable development vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry has taken various measures to improve the sector's resilience and productivity.
Accreditation Protocol for Agroforestry Nurseries
Minister Munda stressed the importance of the Accreditation Protocol for Agroforestry Nurseries, considering it to be a key step in strengthening institutional arrangements for the production and certification of planting material. This protocol is expected to play a vital role in promoting agroforestry across the country. Minister Munda urged all stakeholders to adopt the protocol to ensure the availability of quality planting material, thereby achieving the objectives outlined in the National Agroforestry Policy. He also emphasized the proper utilization of natural resources for sustainable development.
Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to the development of the agricultural sector and addressing climate change, Minister Munda expressed the government's dedication to resolving challenges faced by farmers.
