
India's Kharif sowing crosses 137 lakh hectares, boosted by timely monsoon rains and increased cultivation of rice, moong, and cotton.

India’s Kharif sowing season has picked up strong momentum, crossing 137.84 lakh hectares as of June 20, 2025. According to the latest data from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, this is nearly 13 lakh hectares more than the 124.88 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year. The increase is being attributed to timely monsoon rains and active participation from farmers across the country.

Rice, which is India’s main Kharif crop, has shown a major increase in sowing this year. The total area under rice has reached 13.22 lakh hectares, which is 4.86 lakh hectares more than the area sown by this time last year.
Pulses have also witnessed growth this season. The total sowing area for pulses is now 9.44 lakh hectares. Among them, Moong has shown the highest increase, rising by 1.77 lakh hectares to reach a total of 4.43 lakh hectares. This reflects increasing farmer interest and better weather conditions for pulse cultivation.
The government’s “Shri Anna” initiative to promote coarse cereals has started showing positive results. The total area sown under coarse cereals has reached 18.03 lakh hectares, showing an increase of 3.25 lakh hectares.
Maize continues to dominate in this category with 12.32 lakh hectares, which is 2 lakh hectares more than last year’s figures.

Unlike other crop groups, oilseeds have shown a slight decrease this season. The total area under oilseeds is now 5.38 lakh hectares, down by 0.11 lakh hectares.
Groundnut and soybean cultivation has seen minor decreases.
Sesamum has shown a small increase in area, balancing the overall category slightly.
Cotton has seen a notable rise, with sowing reaching 31.25 lakh hectares, which is 2.14 lakh hectares more than the previous year.
Sugarcane continues its strong performance with 55.07 lakh hectares already covered.
However, jute and mesta cultivation has dropped slightly by 0.17 lakh hectares, with the total standing at 5.46 lakh hectares.
The sharp rise in total sown area shows a positive start to the 2025 Kharif season, driven by timely monsoon rains and increased farm activity. Government officials stated that the upcoming weeks will be important in maintaining this momentum as the monsoon spreads across more regions.
With favourable weather and growing farmer participation, the Kharif crop season is off to a strong beginning, offering hope for a good harvest and stable agricultural output this year.
