The Indian government has announced major changes under the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSM) to support farmers and seed producers. The subsidy for certified seeds has been increased to improve crop yield and profitability.

Key Decisions Under NFSM

  • Higher Seed Subsidy: The subsidy for certified seeds has been increased to benefit farmers and seed producers.
  • Transparent Distribution: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan emphasized that only farmers should benefit from the scheme.
  • Seed Processing Units: Permission has been granted to set up seed processing and storage units at the Gram Panchayat level.

Promotion of Traditional Seed Varieties

The government will focus on promoting traditional seed varieties for their nutritional value, local adaptation, and crop development potential. Farmers will receive assistance for the production, marketing, and distribution of these varieties.

New Mission Objectives

The mission now aims to:

  • Increase production of rice, wheat, pulses, coarse cereals, and nutri-cereals like millets.

  • Increase Seed Replacement Rate (SRR) and Variety Replacement Rate (VRR).

Potato Seed Production & Digital Monitoring

A new component for potato seed production has been approved. All mission activities will be digitally monitored using platforms like Krishi Mapper and Saathi Portal to ensure transparency.

These changes are expected to benefit farmers nationwide by improving seed quality, crop yields, and overall farm profitability.
