Maize demand is rising due to food and industrial use.
The Uttar Pradesh government has included maize under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme. This means that farmers will now receive a guaranteed fair price for their maize produce. This decision is a major relief for maize farmers and ensures stable income and market security for them.

With support from the World Bank-backed UPAGRISE project (Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Growth and Rural Enterprise Ecosystem Strengthening), the state government has set a clear goal. By 2027, maize production in Uttar Pradesh is targeted to reach 27.30 lakh metric tonnes, up from 14.67 lakh metric tonnes in 2021-22.
Expansion of the maize cultivation area
Improved per-hectare yield
Training and awareness for farmers
Use of advanced seeds and farming technology
To finalize the Kharif crop strategy, a State-level Kharif Productivity Seminar 2025 was held at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, Lucknow. The event was chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, with Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi as the chief guest.
The seminar focused on:
Enhancing the production of maize, pulses, and oilseeds
Promoting scientific methods and technical coordination
Increasing farmer income through improved productivity
The Uttar Pradesh government is encouraging more farmers to grow maize. Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi stated that as per Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's vision, maize is being given special priority. This support is showing results, as maize farming is becoming increasingly popular across the state.
Maize is often called the “queen of cereals” due to its many nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Besides human consumption, maize is used in various industries:
Ethanol production
Animal and poultry feed
Pharmaceuticals
Paper and alcohol industry
Baby corn, flour, and popcorn production
Due to this wide usage, market demand for maize remains high, offering better prices for farmers.
According to agricultural experts:
Maize yield in Uttar Pradesh was 21.63 quintals per hectare in 2021-22
The national average is 26 quintals/hectare
In Tamil Nadu, it's as high as 59.39 quintals/hectare
With the right support, Uttar Pradesh farmers can increase yields up to 100 quintals per hectare using:
Advanced seeds and fertilizers
Scientific farming methods
Government training programs
Farmers are receiving:
High-quality seeds and fertilizers
Pesticides and irrigation advice
Regular training for advanced cultivation
Assurance of government procurement at MSP
As per Dr. S.K. Tomar, In-charge of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Belipar (Gorakhpur):
Ideal sowing time: 15 June to 15 July (Kharif season)
If irrigation is available, sowing can begin by the second or third week of May
Tips for better yield:
Use 8 kg of seeds per acre
Maintain 60 cm distance between lines
Maintain 20 cm distance between plants
Use a bed planter if available
Ensure proper drainage in the field

If they follow the recommended practices and take advantage of government schemes, they can expect better income, higher productivity, and strong market demand. The state's goal to double maize production by 2027 is not just ambitious, it’s achievable.
