In collaboration with the International Copper Association of India, the Alliance for an Energy-Efficient Economy (AEEE) has released whitepapers on the 'Market Transformation of Electric 3-wheelers' and 'Market Transformation of Electric 2-wheelers' in India.

Dr Hanif Qureshi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, and Randheer Singh, Director-E-mobility at NITI Aayog, launched the whitepapers, which reaffirmed India's adoption of electric 2-wheelers (E2Ws) and electric 3-wheelers (E3Ws).

"The transformation of the E3W market presents numerous opportunities for individuals, organizations, and governments to drive sustainable transportation solutions and reduce their carbon footprint," Hemanth Kumar, Director, of ICA India, noted.

The following are the key highlights of the Electric 3-wheeler Market Transformation:

  • Because drivers lacked confidence in the performance and range of EVs, 30% of drivers polled preferred not to modify their vehicles.

  • 79% of respondents thought that new E3Ws were more resilient than retrofitted ones, showing a market need for trustworthy and lasting E3Ws.

  • When asked about charging stations in their region of activity, 13% mentioned the issue of non-functional charging outlets.

Furthermore, when it comes to the predominance of E3W, the findings show that 63% of respondents mentioned affordable operations and maintenance expenses as the top reason for purchasing an E3W. However, safety concerns were expressed, with 68% of respondents indicating that they received no security briefing at the time of purchase or afterwards, and 26% claiming that their E3Ws lacked safety measures.

Furthermore, 55% of drivers were ignorant of the safety features in their vehicles, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety awareness and education.

To reap the greatest benefits from this shift, it is critical to provide universal accessibility and affordability of E3W, as well as to invest in the development of the charging infrastructure required to support their widespread usage.
