The Bihar government is offering a subsidy of up to 75% for farmers and unemployed youth under the "Desi Gaupalan Protsahan Yojana" to promote indigenous cow rearing. This initiative aims to encourage chemical-free natural farming and self-employment opportunities. Interested beneficiaries can now apply online.
The Department of Animal and Fisheries Resources, Government of Bihar, launched the "Desi Gaupalan Protsahan Yojana" in the financial year 2023-24. The scheme promotes rearing indigenous cows such as Sahiwal, Gir, and Tharparkar. The number of beneficiaries increased from 923 in 2023-24 to 1,091 in 2024-25.
Under this scheme, eligible individuals can set up dairy farms with 2 or 4 cows and receive financial assistance through loans and grants. The initiative supports rural farmers, landless individuals, and unemployed youth to generate income through dairy farming.
This scheme is available to residents of rural Bihar. Eligible applicants include:
Landless farmers
Small and marginal farmers
Farmers living below the poverty line
Educated unemployed youth
75% subsidy for Extremely Backward Class (OBC), Scheduled Caste (SC), and Scheduled Tribe (ST) beneficiaries.
50% subsidy for beneficiaries from other categories.
40% subsidy for setting up a dairy unit with 15-20 indigenous cows.
The scheme provides financial aid based on the number of cows:
For 2 cows: Cost fixed at Rs 1,60,000
OBC/SC/ST beneficiaries: Subsidy of Rs 1,20,000
Other categories: Subsidy of Rs 80,000
For 4 cows: Cost fixed at Rs 3,38,400
OBC/SC/ST beneficiaries: Subsidy of Rs 2,53,800
Other categories: Subsidy of Rs 1,69,200
Interested beneficiaries can apply online through the Directorate of Cow Development, Government of Bihar at https://dairy.bihar.gov.in.
2 or 4 cows: Minimum 5 Kattha (18 Decimal) of own or leased land.
15 or 20 cows: Minimum 10 Kattha (37.2 Decimal) of own or leased land.
Applicants must meet the following criteria and provide the necessary documents:
Must be at least 18 years old
No family member should be an income tax payer
Identity card and Aadhar card
Residence certificate (self-attested copies)
Land ownership proof or lease agreement
Bank passbook photocopy
Affidavit confirming no loan default
Project report and dairy training certificate
Milk committee membership certificate
Two passport-sized photographs
