The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken another major step towards improving urban cleanliness and promoting sustainable transportation by inducting 135 electric sanitation vehicles into its waste management fleet. Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi flagged off the new electric garbage collection vehicles during an event held in Sector 10, Rohini, highlighting the city's commitment to cleaner roads, better waste management, and lower carbon emissions.
The initiative has been launched under the Delhi Government's Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 and supports the vision of making Delhi a cleaner, greener, and more environmentally friendly city.
The newly inducted fleet of 135 electric waste collection vehicles will be deployed across four MCD zones:
Rohini
Narela
Civil Lines
Keshav Puram
Out of the total fleet, 46 electric sanitation vehicles will be stationed in the Rohini zone, strengthening door-to-door garbage collection services in the area.
The induction of these electric vehicles is expected to modernize Delhi's sanitation system while replacing conventional fuel-powered garbage collection vehicles with zero-emission electric alternatives.
The electric sanitation vehicles have been introduced under the Delhi Government's new Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 (2026–2030). The initiative aligns with the vision of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to build a clean, green, and sustainable capital.
By shifting to electric garbage collection vehicles, the MCD aims to:
Improve waste collection efficiency.
Reduce dependence on conventional fuels.
Lower the city's carbon footprint.
Strengthen urban sanitation infrastructure.
Promote environmentally friendly municipal operations.
The move is expected to play an important role in making Delhi's civic services more sustainable while supporting the state's clean mobility goals.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is strengthening its sanitation infrastructure in a planned and systematic manner by introducing modern equipment across different zones.
He stated that the newly added electric sanitation vehicles will improve the efficiency of door-to-door waste collection while also helping conserve traditional fuels. According to the Mayor, adopting electric vehicles in municipal services is a significant milestone in Delhi's journey towards becoming a cleaner and greener city.
During the event, Mayor Pravesh Wahi also stressed the importance of waste segregation at the source and appealed to residents to actively support the MCD's cleanliness efforts.
He urged citizens to separate household waste into four categories as required under the new Solid Waste Management Rules. According to him, proper segregation and treatment of wet waste at the source can significantly reduce the amount of garbage reaching landfill sites.
Effective waste segregation not only improves recycling and composting but also makes the overall waste management process more efficient.
The induction of electric garbage collection vehicles marks a significant upgrade to Delhi's sanitation fleet. Besides reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, these vehicles are expected to improve the efficiency of municipal waste collection services across multiple zones.
The initiative demonstrates how electric mobility can be integrated into essential public services while supporting environmental conservation and cleaner urban living.
