CSIR's Electric Tractor and Lavender Farming Transforming India's Agriculture

On the occasion of Republic Day, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) displayed the country's first compact electric tractor for women and the 'purple revolution' on its tableau. The purple revolution, which involves the cultivation of lavender in Bhaderwah of Jammu and Kashmir, showcases India's scientific excellence and the entrepreneurial potential of local farmers who have become successful agri-entrepreneurs.

The tableau, decorated with lavender flowers, narrates the story of the creation of a superior variety of lavender at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine in Jammu. This special variety is grown and processed to make essential oils, perfumes, and incense sticks. Lavender, which has a calming aroma, has become a profitable product, with lavender oil fetching at least Rs 10,000 per litre.

The Purple Revolution is proof of the joint efforts of scientists and local farmers, creating a new culture of agri-startups in India. Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh has often lauded the initiative as an outstanding journey from the lab to the market, highlighting its role in enhancing the agricultural sector.

One of the attractions of the CSIR tableau was the presentation of India's first compact electric tractor for women, developed by CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute in Durgapur. This innovative tractor is a significant step towards sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices.
