Continental to Stop Making Truck and Bus Tyres in Meerut Plant, Focuses on Car Tyres

Key Highlights:

  • Continental will stop manufacturing truck and bus radial (TBR) tyres at its Modipuram, Meerut plant.
  • The plant will now focus only on producing passenger car and light truck (PLT) tyres.
  • The decision was made due to high competition and price sensitivity in the TBR segment.
  • Affected employees will receive support, including career counselling, job opportunities, and voluntary retirement packages.
  • Continental remains committed to the Indian market and aims to strengthen its passenger vehicle tyre business.

Continental has announced that it will stop making truck and bus radial (TBR) tyres at its Modipuram plant in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, from June 2025. The company shared this news on June 2, 2025. From now on, the plant will focus solely on making tyres for passenger cars and light trucks.

This decision came after a full business review. Continental said that the TBR segment in India is facing tough competition and high price sensitivity, making it hard for the company to continue in that market. Only the TBR production line at Modipuram will shut down. The rest of the plant will keep running for car and light truck tyre production. Continental has also said it will support employees affected by this change. This includes career counselling, help in finding new jobs, and voluntary retirement options.

About Continental

Continental, which started in 1871, operates in 55 countries and had global sales of €39.7 billion in 2024. Its tyre division made €13.9 billion and employs over 57,000 people worldwide. In India, Continental has sales and distribution operations in Faridabad, manufacturing in Modipuram, and an IT hub in Bengaluru. The company said India is still an important market for its Asia-Pacific operations.

With this shift, Continental aims to grow its car tyre business in India. It wants to improve its local product line and manufacturing abilities to better serve both replacement buyers and vehicle makers. Continental makes tyres for a wide range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, two-wheelers, and even speciality vehicles. It also provides digital services for fleets and tyre shops. The company is one of the world’s biggest tyre makers and has been in the industry for over 150 years.

CMV360 Says

Continental’s decision to stop truck and bus tyre production in India reflects the real challenges global companies face in highly competitive markets. The truck and bus tyre segment in India is price-sensitive and dominated by well-established local players, making it tough for international brands to sustain profits. By shifting focus to the passenger and light truck segment, Continental is choosing a more stable and growing part of the market. While this move may impact some workers, the company’s commitment to offering support shows responsibility. In the long run, concentrating on what works best could help Continental grow stronger in India.
