Key Highlights:
Continental, a technology company, has expanded production of Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) for passenger automobiles at its Bengaluru plant to meet rising market demand in India. Continental targets local OEMs and intends to expand into export markets, notably in Korea.
The newly opened TPMS line is the expansion of the old one, with a capacity of 3.3 million wheel units annually. This cutting-edge facility matches the company's smart manufacturing objectives, with completely automated operations requiring minimal manual interaction.
The initial phase of the new TPMS line will involve local assembly of the wheel units. Future plans include a focus on localizing production of smaller components.
The second generation TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) offers significant advancements in monitoring tyre pressure, temperature, and motion directly from within the tyre.
This information is transmitted wirelessly via radio frequency through the vehicle's communication network to be displayed on the instrument cluster. This precise and timely data about tyre conditions is essential for maintaining optimal air pressure, ensuring vehicle safety, and improving overall efficiency.
Technological Advancements
Ramnath Sivaraman, Head of Motion Technologies and Services at Continental Automotive India, highlighted the enhanced capabilities of the second-generation TPMS. It offers improved accuracy in monitoring tyre pressure, temperature, and motion inside the tyre. This information is transmitted wirelessly through the vehicle's communication network to display on the instrument cluster, ensuring timely updates on tyre conditions.
Phanindra Karody, Head of Continental Automotive India's Bangalore Plant, adding, "Continental remains committed to localization. The newly enlarged TPMS range also includes cutting-edge smart manufacturing techniques, such as collaborating robots (Cobots) and digital traceability solutions. This line expansion demonstrates our commitment to increasing production capacity to fulfil both local and worldwide demand. Over the next three years, we intend to increase the capacity of our TPMS line and quadruple output to support our expansion."
Continental's TPMS offers benefits such as optimum tyre usage, improved driving safety, decreased CO₂ emissions, reduced fuel consumption, and increased battery range for electric vehicles. Advanced features such as 'bad tyre' localization and user-friendly applications such as the Filling Assistant and Tire Data greatly improve TPMS usage and value for customers.
