Bihar Government Offers 75% Subsidy for Onion Storage Construction

The Bihar government is offering a 75% subsidy for the construction of onion storage units to help farmers store their produce effectively. This initiative aims to control onion prices and ensure farmers get fair market prices.

In the 2024-25 crop year, onion production is expected to rise by 19%, reaching 288.77 lakh tonnes. However, with increased production, storage becomes a challenge for farmers. To address this, the government is encouraging farmers to build storage units by providing financial support.

Key Details of the Onion Storage Scheme:

• Subsidy: Farmers can receive up to ₹4.5 lakh to build a storage unit for 50 metric tons of onions. The estimated cost of constructing such a unit is ₹6 lakh, and farmers will only need to contribute 25% of the cost.
• Eligibility: This scheme benefits farmers from 23 districts of Bihar, including Bhojpur, Buxar, Patna, Purnia, and Vaishali.
• Application: Interested farmers can apply online through the official website of the Directorate of Horticulture, Bihar. They can also visit CSC or Vasundhara Centers for assistance in submitting their applications.

1. Visit the official website of the Directorate of Horticulture: https://horticulture.bihar.gov.in.
2. Click on the link for “Scheme related to storage structure” and then select the subsidy option for onion storage construction.
3. Fill in the required details and submit your application.

Important Notes:

• Only one onion storage house can be built per farmer family under this scheme.
• The construction must begin within 15 days of receiving the work order; otherwise, the order may be canceled.
• The subsidy will be given in one installment after verification.
