All public and private vehicles must have emergency panic buttons and location-tracking devices for safety. The Karnataka cabinet approved the installation of vehicle tracking devices and emergency panic buttons in all vehicles, including buses, trucks, and three-wheelers.

After the cabinet meeting, Law Minister J C Madhuswamy told reporters that the decision was made by Union government directives. He stated that Rs 20.36 crore has been sanctioned for this project. 60% of this project will be bear by the Union government and 40% by the state government.

According to the minister, the move is primarily intended to ensure the safety of women and children. The action will improve highway safety. The GPS devices would notify authorities of any overspeeding vehicles. It will prevent highway accidents, as well as keep track of parking.

Once the program takes place, the government will centrally monitor the vehicles. According to the minister, this would allow the government to crack down on tax evaders and people who misuse their transportation licenses. Authorities will be able to track whether vehicles are following the correct routes and keep an eye out for unauthorised vehicles using a central mechanised system.

Over 6.08 lakh vehicles will have the devices installed, including 4.51 lakh taxis and cabs, 16,432 school buses, 23,077 private transport vehicles, 24,701 KSRTC buses, 5,138 contract vehicles, 1,900 tourist buses, and 85,949 goods vehicles.
