Accelera by Cummins, the zero-emissions business segment of Cummins Inc., along with partners Daimler Trucks & Buses and PACCAR, has chosen Marshall County, Mississippi, as the future site for advanced battery cell manufacturing.

Driving Economic Growth and Job Creation

The joint venture aims to localize battery cell production for commercial electric vehicles, anticipating the creation of over 2,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs. The partners plan to expand further as demand for electric vehicles grows. The 21-gigawatt hour (GWh) factory is scheduled to commence battery cell production in 2027.

A Transformative Collaboration

Announced in September 2023, the joint venture between Accelera, Daimler Truck, and PACCAR is geared towards delivering cost-effective and differentiated battery cell technology. Focused on lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technology for commercial battery-electric trucks, the venture will see each partner owning 30% and jointly controlling the business.

EVE Energy, a global leader in LFP battery cells, joins as a technology partner with 10% ownership.

Mississippi for Climate Goals

John O’Leary, President and CEO of Daimler Truck North America, expressed gratitude to the state of Mississippi and the Marshall County community, highlighting the importance of localized battery cell production in providing cost-effective options for decarbonizing operations.

Cummins Chair and CEO, Jennifer Rumsey, expressed excitement about the site selection, stating, “This represents an exciting and tangible step toward advancing our Destination Zero strategy and our vision to lead the industry toward a decarbonized future.”

PACCAR CEO Preston Feight added, “The state, the communities, and the people of Mississippi are wonderful business partners for PACCAR. We look forward to expanding that partnership in northern Mississippi with this new battery cell factory that will provide industry-leading cost-effective zero-emissions solutions for our customers.”

The venture represents a collaborative effort to make strides in the adoption of electric vehicles, supporting the transition to a more sustainable and eco-friendly transportation industry.
