The Central Government has announced a major update in the e-National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) scheme. Farmers who want to avail of subsidies and other services under this scheme will now have to provide their Aadhaar details. This step has been taken to make the system more transparent and to ensure that only genuine farmers receive the benefits.

The e-NAM (Electronic National Agriculture Market) is a pan-India electronic trading platform. It links existing Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and mandis to create a unified national market for agricultural goods.
Here’s how it helps farmers and traders:
Farmers can sell their crops through nearby e-NAM mandis.
Traders can bid online from anywhere in the country.
It offers a single-window service for APMC-related services like the arrival of produce, quality testing, online bidding, and e-payments.
Farmers also receive subsidies and other benefits such as:
AI-based quality testing of produce
Real-time price updates
Direct payment into their bank accounts
Now, all of these services will only be available if farmers provide their Aadhaar number while registering on the e-NAM portal.
Earlier, Aadhaar was not needed to use e-NAM services. But now, the government has made it compulsory due to increasing cases of fraud and misuse of subsidies.
By linking Aadhaar with the e-NAM account:
The chances of fraud in registration and subsidy claims will be reduced.
Only genuine farmers will get the direct benefits in their bank accounts.
It will also stop fake beneficiaries from misusing the scheme.
While this rule aims to increase transparency, it may also cause problems for farmers who don’t have their Aadhaar linked. If they fail to update their details, they might not receive government services or subsidies.
This could go against the main purpose of the e-NAM platform, which is to:
Encourage farmers to sell directly to traders
Eliminate middlemen
Ensure better prices and timely payments
Even with these challenges, the government believes Aadhaar linkage is a necessary step to digitize the agriculture sector.
The e-NAM portal currently allows trade in 231 agricultural products, giving farmers and traders a wide range of options to do business online.
The Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI) has created trade parameters for 221 products. Recently, 10 new items were added, including:
Newly Added Products:
Category | Products Added |
Agricultural goods | Dry basil leaves, gram flour, wheat flour, chana sattu, water chestnut flour |

The e-NAM scheme is a key initiative to bring India’s agriculture sector online. Making Aadhaar mandatory is a bold move to prevent fraud and ensure that only real and deserving farmers benefit from government support.
Farmers are encouraged to link their Aadhaar details with their e-NAM accounts soon to avoid missing out on subsidies and digital trading services.
