Every year, approximately 1.19 million lives are lost in road traffic crashes, with an additional 20 to 50 million people suffering non-fatal injuries. The economic impact is substantial, affecting individuals, families, and nations.

Road safety is a critical concern globally, with a significant focus on reducing accidents and ensuring the well-being of all road users. On Road Safety Day, let's delve into the features incorporated in commercial vehicles and tractors to prevent accidents.

road safety week

India has the highest number of road accident-related deaths globally, making up 11% of such incidents worldwide, according to a Grant Thornton report. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has released the Annual Report on 'Road Accidents in India-2022'. The report is based on data from police departments, following standardized formats from the UNESCAP under the APRAD project.

In 2022, there were 4,61,312 road accidents, resulting in 1,68,491 deaths and 4,43,366 injuries. This shows an 11.9% increase in accidents, 9.4% in fatalities, and 15.3% in injuries compared to the previous year. Whereas, In 2021, there were 4,12,432 road accidents in India, causing 1,53,972 deaths and injuring 3,84,448 people.

Road safety is a critical concern globally, with a significant focus on reducing accidents and ensuring the well-being of all road users. On Road Safety Day, let's delve into the features incorporated in commercial vehicles and tractors to prevent accidents.

Road Traffic Safety: A Global Concern

Every year, approximately 1.19 million lives are lost in road traffic crashes, with an additional 20 to 50 million people suffering non-fatal injuries. The economic impact is substantial, affecting individuals, families, and nations.

Who is at Risk?

Socioeconomic Status

  • Over 90% of road traffic deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Higher death rates in the WHO African Region, and lower rates in the European Region.
  • Within high-income countries, lower socioeconomic backgrounds face higher crash risks.

Age

  • Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for those aged 5–29 years.
  • Two-thirds of road traffic fatalities occur among people aged 18–59 years.

Sex

  • Males are three times more likely to be killed in road crashes than females.

Risk Factors

The Safe System Approach

  • Emphasizes safe roads, safe speeds, safe vehicles, and safe road users.
  • Aims to eliminate fatal crashes and reduce serious injuries.

Speeding

  • Higher speeds increase the likelihood and severity of crashes.
  • Every 1% increase in mean speed leads to a 4% increase in fatal crash risk.
  • Pedestrians' fatality risk rises rapidly with increased speed.

Driving Under the Influence

  • Alcohol and psychoactive substances increase the risk of fatal crashes.
  • Risk starts at low levels of blood alcohol concentration.
  • Drug use increases crash risk, with variations depending on the substance.

Non-use of Safety Measures

  • Helmets reduce crash death risk by more than six times.
  • Seat belts reduce death risk by up to 50%.
  • Child restraints lead to a 71% reduction in infant deaths.

Distracted Driving

  • Mobile phone use increases crash risk fourfold.
  • Texting significantly raises crash risk.
  • Hands-free phones are not significantly safer than handheld ones.

Unsafe Road Infrastructure

  • Road design impacts safety.
  • Adequate facilities for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are crucial.

Unsafe Vehicles

  • Vehicle safety regulations, if applied, can save lives.
  • Front and side impact regulations, electronic stability control, airbags, and seatbelts are essential.

Inadequate Post-Crash Care

  • Timely care is crucial for minimizing severity.
  • Improving prehospital and hospital care is essential.

Inadequate Law Enforcement

  • Effective enforcement of traffic laws is vital.
  • Laws on drink-driving, seat-belt use, speed limits, and helmets must be enforced.

Prevention

Governments need to take action, involving multiple sectors such as transport, police, health, education, private sector, and civil society organizations. Effective interventions include designing safer infrastructure, improving vehicle safety, enhancing post-crash care, enforcing laws, and raising public awareness.

Safety Features in Commercial Vehicles for Road Accident Prevention

Implementing safety measures in commercial vehicles is crucial to minimize the severity and occurrence of accidents.

Antilock Braking System (ABS)

  • Prevents wheel lock during braking.
  • Enables steering control, reducing stopping distance and rollover risks.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

  • Detects and corrects traction loss and skidding.
  • Applies brakes to individual wheels, and maintains control on slippery or curved roads.

Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)

  • Uses sensors to detect imminent collisions.
  • Automatically applies brakes to reduce impact speed and injury severity.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

  • Monitors vehicle position within the lane.
  • Alerts the driver if unintentional lane drift occurs, preventing collisions.

Blind Spot Detection (BSD)

  • Uses radar or cameras to identify blind spot obstacles.
  • Warns driver to avoid lane changes or collisions while reversing.

Airbags

  • Inflatable cushions for rapid deployment during crashes.
  • Mitigates head, chest, and abdominal injuries by protecting occupants.

Seatbelts

  • Straps securing occupants to their seats.
  • Reduces fatal and serious injuries by 45-50%, emphasizes proper adjustment and usage.

Seatbelt Reminders

  • Visual or audible signals reminding occupants to fasten seatbelts.
  • Increases seatbelt usage, reducing unbelted casualties.

While safety features enhance protection, they complement safe driving practices. Adhering to speed limits, and traffic rules, avoiding distractions, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles remain essential. By combining safety features with responsible driving, commercial vehicle drivers can effectively prevent or reduce the impact of road accidents.

Safety Features in Tractors for Road Accident Prevention

Tractors play a crucial role in agricultural operations, but their presence on roads poses certain risks due to their design for rough terrain and low speeds. Safety Features in Tractors:

Roll-over Protective Structures (ROPS)

  • Purpose: Protect the driver in roll-over accidents.
  • Description: Frames or cages designed to prevent crushing injuries.

Seat Belts

  • Purpose: Secures the driver during sudden stops or brakes.
  • Description: Devices that keep the driver in the seat to prevent ejection.

Power Take-Off (PTO) Guards

  • Purpose: Prevents entanglement in rotating shafts or gears.
  • Description: Covers or shields to ensure safety during machinery operation.

Lights and Reflectors

  • Purpose: Enhances visibility for other road users, especially in low-light conditions.
  • Description: Devices to make the tractor easily visible, ensuring safer road travel.

Slow-Moving Vehicle (SMV) Signs

  • Purpose: Indicates the tractor's slow speed to other drivers.
  • Description: Triangular signs warning of speeds 40 km/h or less, prompting caution from other road users.

Tractors incorporate these safety features to improve their overall safety and efficiency, reducing the risks associated with their presence on roads.

Road Accident Statistics

While vehicle safety features have improved significantly, road accidents remain a challenge. According to recent statistics:

Global Accident Numbers: In 2022, there were approximately 1.35 million road traffic deaths worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for continued efforts to enhance road safety.

Contributing Factors: Common factors contributing to accidents include speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and lack of adherence to traffic rules.

Commercial Vehicle Involvement: A notable portion of road accidents involves commercial vehicles. However, the implementation of advanced safety features has contributed to reducing the severity and frequency of such incidents.
