Farmers in Rajasthan will soon receive overdue crop insurance claims worth approximately Rs 78 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). The Agriculture Minister of Rajasthan, Dr. Kirori Lal, has directed the officials to speed up the payments to help farmers who suffered crop losses from natural disasters. This decision brings hope to farmers who have been waiting for compensation for years.
The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is a crop insurance scheme the central government runs to protect farmers from financial losses caused by natural disasters. Under PMFBY, farmers are compensated for crop losses due to events like storms, floods, heavy rain, and hailstorms. This scheme is like a shield for farmers, helping them recover from unexpected weather-related damages.
However, many farmers in Rajasthan have yet to receive their compensation despite crop losses. The government has now instructed the insurance companies to pay these claims soon, likely bringing relief to farmers whose claims have been pending for years.
For many farmers in Rajasthan, insurance claims have been pending since 2017, totaling nearly Rs 78 crore. Due to issues related to bank accounts, these payments have been delayed. The Agriculture Minister has instructed officials to ensure that these payments reach the farmers by organizing camps where farmers can submit necessary documents, such as Aadhaar details, new bank account information, and, if needed, death certificates.
Officials from the Agriculture Department and representatives from insurance companies will be on hand to help farmers address any missing details, speeding up the claim process. The goal is to clear all pending claims by November 2024, so farmers can finally receive their due payments.
When crops are damaged by natural disasters, farmers must report the loss to their insurance company, local bank, or agriculture office within 72 hours. Representatives from the insurance company, along with agriculture department officials, then assess the damage to determine the amount for compensation.
Farmers need to submit a claim form with details such as their name, the survey number of the affected crop, the crop area, and their registered mobile number. Farmers who have taken a loan should also provide their Kisan Credit Card (KCC) account number, while those without a loan should share their savings bank account number.
For farmers who face crop loss after harvest, the Crop Insurance App can also be used to submit details along with photos of the damage. Once the verification is complete, the insurance company directly transfers the claim amount to the farmer’s bank account.
Farmers who wish to insure their crops under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana can do so by paying a small premium based on the crop type. For Rabi crops, farmers pay a 1.5% premium, while for Kharif crops, the premium is 2%. Commercial and horticultural crops are covered as well, though with a slightly higher premium of 5%.
To apply for PMFBY or get more information, farmers can visit the official PMFBY website at https://pmfby.gov.in. They can also contact their nearest agriculture department office or local insurance company for help.
The recent decision to release pending insurance claims under PMFBY is a positive step for Rajasthan's farmers. With quick actions from the government and local departments, farmers are expected to receive their due compensation soon, bringing them much-needed relief during challenging times.
