Volvo introduces stop-start engine technology for heavy-duty trucks.
Feature cuts fuel use and CO2 emissions by up to 1%.
Works by shutting off the engine on downhill slopes above 60 kph.
Offered on Volvo FH and FH Aero with a 13-litre diesel engine.
Available for customer orders from September 2025.
Volvo Trucks has launched a world-first innovation in the heavy-duty truck industry with its new stop-start engine technology. This feature, developed in-house, is designed to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, supporting Volvo’s mission to reduce transportation’s climate impact.
The new feature is an upgrade to Volvo’s existing I-Roll technology, now combined with stop-start functionality. It works by constantly monitoring road data and road curvature. When a downhill slope is detected, the engine automatically shuts off, consuming zero fuel and producing no CO2 emissions during that period.
Activated at speeds above 60 kph.
Monitors road topography and conditions.
Shuts off the engine temporarily on slopes to save fuel.
Restarts smoothly without driver input.
Volvo says this addition can cut up to one percent extra in fuel and CO2 emissions, depending on conditions such as road type and temperature.
The stop-start feature will be offered on the Volvo FH and FH Aero trucks powered by a 13-litre diesel engine. Customers will be able to order it starting in September 2025.
Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, stated: “Our engineers have done it again, innovating a new engine technology that contributes to making transport by truck more fuel-efficient. As part of our decarbonization strategy, we will continue to innovate to make our combustion engines even better and to reduce our impact on the environment.”
Volvo Trucks is pursuing a multi-path decarbonization strategy, which includes improving combustion engines with renewable fuels, as well as expanding its battery-electric and fuel-cell electric truck lineup.
Volvo Trucks latest innovation shows its strong push toward greener transportation. By combining advanced technology with practical fuel-saving features, the company aims to make heavy-duty trucks more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. This stop-start system marks another milestone in Volvo’s journey toward sustainable trucking.
