Volvo emerges as the sole bidder for SETC’s tender to supply 20 high-spec multi-axle AC buses, aiming to boost Tamil Nadu’s premium intercity transport services.
Key Highlights:
In a major development for Tamil Nadu’s public transport system, Volvo has emerged as the only bidder for a prestigious tender floated by the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) to procure 20 fully built, multi-axle air-conditioned buses. The tender was announced last month, with a specific requirement for fully built units, moving away from the usual bus assembly done in Karur.
High Standards Narrow Competition
This tender came with very specific and high-end requirements, including:
Due to these demanding conditions, only a few players in the market were considered capable of delivering, and Volvo was seen as the frontrunner from the start. Now, with no other contenders, Volvo stands alone in the race.
Evaluation Underway
SETC officials are now reviewing Volvo’s bid. If the pricing falls within the state’s estimated budget, a purchase order will be placed. The selected buses are expected to come in two seating configurations: 51+1 or 55+1. These buses will include modern comfort features like wide gangways, theatre-style seating for better visibility, individual USB charging ports, air conditioning vents for each seat, and LED TV screens at both ends of the bus.
Matching Private Luxury Standards
The new fleet is part of a broader plan by SETC to upgrade its services and compete with private luxury bus operators, especially on high-traffic routes such as:
With the growing popularity of private premium buses among long-distance travellers, the government aims to win back passengers by offering better facilities and comfort.
More Than Just Comfort
Beyond seating and entertainment, the buses will include underbody luggage storage compartments, providing ample space for baggage. Anti-skid flooring will be installed to ensure passenger safety while boarding or moving around during travel.
A Strategic Move for SETC
SETC officials see this procurement as a turning point to transform the image of government-run transport. By introducing Volvo’s premium buses into its fleet, the corporation hopes to offer a travel experience that matches or exceeds what private players provide.

CMV360 Says
The decision to upgrade SETC’s fleet with premium Volvo buses is a positive step. It shows the state’s commitment to offering safer and more comfortable travel options for long-distance passengers. If all goes well with the bid evaluation, these state-of-the-art buses could soon be hitting the roads, giving Tamil Nadu’s intercity travellers a more comfortable and stylish ride option.
