Volkswagen Truck & Bus has officially started delivering its new electric bus, the e-Volksbus, in Brazil. This marks a significant step in the country’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable public transportation systems.
The initial rollout includes a total of 100 e-Volksbus 22L units. Recently, the first 50 electric buses were delivered to Transppass, a public transport operator in São Paulo, where they will be used in daily city operations.
The e-Volksbus is manufactured in Brazil and designed specifically to meet the needs of Brazilian public transport operators.
Volkswagen Truck & Bus, also known as Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus (VWTB), unveiled the electric bus in spring 2024. Production was planned for the second half of last year, and the company has successfully met this timeline.
The electric bus was developed at Volkswagen’s facility in Resende, Rio de Janeiro. VWTB used its five years of experience from the electric truck e-Delivery to develop the e-Volksbus, with both vehicles sharing key technologies and components.
The e-Volksbus 22L is a 13.2-metre low-entry electric bus designed for urban routes. It can carry up to 82 passengers, making it suitable for high-demand city transport.
A 280 kW electric motor powers the bus and uses 12 LFP battery cells with a total capacity of 385 kWh. This setup offers a driving range of up to 250 kilometres on a single charge, which meets the daily operational needs of city bus routes.
Since May 2025, the e-Volksbus 22L has been tested under real-world conditions in São Paulo. After a successful trial phase, Brazilian public transport operators quickly placed orders for the first 100 units, showing strong confidence in the electric bus.
Following this, the first batch of 50 buses was delivered to Transppass, while the remaining units are scheduled for phased delivery.
The first e-Volksbus was also expected to reach Resende in southern Rio de Janeiro state recently. There, it will be operated by Viação Princesinha do Vale.
The remaining electric buses will be delivered to more public transport operators starting in January 2026, including additional units for Resende. However, Volkswagen Truck & Bus has not shared detailed delivery timelines.
Along with delivering the buses, VWTB has introduced a comprehensive technical support programme. This includes operator training, guidance on daily use, and maintenance strategies that can be handled in operators’ own workshops.
Volkswagen’s dealer network is fully prepared to support these electric buses by ensuring spare parts availability and continuous service. All support services are tailored to the specific needs of each public transport operator.
With the start of e-Volksbus deliveries, Volkswagen Truck & Bus is strengthening its role in Brazil’s electric mobility journey and supporting the transition to cleaner urban transport.
