Tata Motors has announced a major leadership change as part of its business restructuring plan. Shailesh Chandra has been appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tata Motors, effective October 1, 2025. This decision marks a significant step as the company restructures its passenger vehicle (PV), electric vehicle (EV), and commercial vehicle (CV) businesses.

Shailesh Chandra Takes Charge of Tata Motors

Shailesh Chandra will serve as Additional Director, MD, and CEO for a three-year term starting October 1, 2025. He will continue to lead Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, the company’s fully-owned EV subsidiary, alongside his new responsibilities.

Chandra has been a part of Tata Motors since 2016, playing a key role in corporate strategy and electric mobility. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping Tata’s EV journey in India.

P B Balaji Moves to JLR in the UK

P B Balaji, who resigned as Group CEO of Tata Motors, will take charge as the CEO of Jaguar Land Rover Automotive in the UK on the same date, October 1, 2025. This move is part of Tata Motors’ long-term strategy to strengthen its passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle businesses independently.

Tata Motors is reorganizing its operations into two main entities:

To lead the CV business, the board has appointed Girish Wagh as Additional Director, MD, and CEO of TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd. His appointment is also effective from October 1, 2025.

Shailesh Chandra’s Career and Education

Chandra joined Tata Motors in April 2016 as Head of Corporate Strategy and Business Transformation and later became President of Electric Mobility Business. Before Tata Motors, he worked with Tata Sons Limited as General Manager – Group Strategy and AVP – Group Chairman’s Office.

He is also a Non-Executive Director at Tata Technologies, Fiat India, and international entities like Trilix S.r.l., Italy, and Tata Motors Design Tech Centre Plc, UK.

Chandra holds a mechanical engineering degree from Banaras Hindu University and an Executive MBA from S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research. His deep understanding of corporate strategy and electric mobility is expected to guide Tata Motors through this transformative phase.

With these leadership changes and restructuring, Tata Motors is aiming to sharpen its focus on electric vehicles, strengthen its commercial vehicle business, and enhance its position in the Indian and global automotive markets.
