Key Highlights

Swedish truck maker Scania is gearing up for a new phase of growth in India, starting with mining and construction segments. The company plans to gradually expand into road haulage in the coming years.

A Fresh Start with Strong Leadership

Leading this new journey is Silvio Munhoz, a 43-year veteran of the trucking industry. After coming out of retirement, Munhoz is treating Scania India like a start-up while ensuring it follows the strict compliance and quality standards of its parent company, the Volkswagen Group.

Munhoz has worked extensively with Scania in Brazil and Chile and is introducing the concept of “solution sales” in India. Instead of only selling trucks, Scania aims to provide complete transport solutions, including financing, leasing, driver training, uptime guarantees, and resale support.

“We are not selling a truck anymore; we are selling a complete solution,” Munhoz said.

Narrow but Focused Growth Strategy

Scania had earlier faced compliance issues and even shut down its bus plant in India. However, the company now says it is “fully compliant, fully reset, and ready to grow.”

In the short term, Scania will focus on:

Once it builds a strong base, Scania plans to enter road haulage within the next three to four years.

Building a Strong Ecosystem

Scania is working to create a robust support network for its customers. This includes:

Launch of Scania Super Series

Scania recently launched its Super Series trucks in India. These feature new engines, gearboxes, and chassis, and are marketed as highly fuel-efficient trucks.

Key highlights of the Super Series:

Munhoz stated that while electric trucks are the future, better diesel technology can still significantly reduce emissions today, especially for challenging applications like mining and long-haul transport.

Production, Localisation, and Future Plans

Scania’s Narasapura plant near Bengaluru has a capacity of 2,000 units annually, though current production is much lower. Localisation levels are currently under 30%, but Scania plans to raise this by 2026, using learnings from its China operations to enhance local sourcing and assembly.

Future plans include:

Scania is not reviving its earlier bus body manufacturing business but sees strong potential in luxury coach chassis, driven by the growing demand for sleeper buses in India.

CMV360 Says

Scania’s renewed strategy signals a strong comeback in India’s commercial vehicle market. With a focus on mining, construction, and complete transport solutions, the company aims to build a solid foundation before expanding into road haulage and exports. If successful, Scania could become a key player in India’s heavy-duty truck segment once again.
