Ceremony attended by Lt. Governor, CM, and Speaker of Puducherry.
In a major step towards greener and smarter mobility, the Puducherry government officially introduced 25 new Olectra electric buses to its public transport network on October 27, 2025. The induction marks a significant milestone in the Smart City initiative, aimed at creating a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable transport system for the Union Territory.
The new fleet was flagged off by Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, along with Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and Speaker R. Selvam in the presence of senior officials and dignitaries.
The newly added electric buses, manufactured by Olectra Greentech Ltd, include 15 non-air-conditioned and 10 air-conditioned models. Each bus measures 9 metres in length and is designed for zero-emission and noise-free operation, providing passengers with a comfortable and eco-friendly travel experience.
These buses can travel up to 200 kilometres on a single charge, making them suitable for intra-city and suburban routes within Puducherry.
The operation and maintenance of the entire electric bus fleet will be handled by Evey Trans Private Limited, a company under the MEIL Group, for a period of 12 years. The buses will run under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, ensuring smooth, reliable, and cost-efficient service without operational burden on the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC).
Expressing gratitude for the government’s support, Mahesh Babu, Managing Director of Olectra Greentech Limited, said: “We are delighted to partner with the Government of Puducherry and PRTC in advancing the Smart City mission through sustainable mobility. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to promoting cleaner public transport infrastructure across India.”
Earlier this year, PRTC and transport authorities inspected and approved prototype buses, ensuring quality and safety standards before deploying the fleet.
Olectra Greentech has emerged as one of India’s leading electric bus manufacturers. According to company data, Olectra’s e-buses have collectively travelled over 440 million kilometres across the country. This achievement has helped in saving approximately 135.4 million litres of diesel and reducing about 362.8 million kilograms of CO₂ emissions — equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting 16.8 million trees.
Founded in 2000, Olectra Greentech Limited was the first company to introduce electric buses in India in 2015. Today, the company operates e-buses in 10 states and 2 union territories, covering more than 75 cities and delivering over 3,000 electric vehicles to date.
Besides electric mobility, Olectra also manufactures silicone rubber and composite insulators used in power transmission and distribution networks, contributing to India’s sustainable infrastructure growth.
The introduction of these 25 Olectra electric buses marks a vital step in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable urban mobility in Puducherry. It also aligns with India’s broader goals of transitioning toward clean energy transport and eco-friendly cities.
As Puducherry embraces this new electric fleet, the initiative not only enhances public transport efficiency but also sets a strong example for other cities working towards a greener future.
The launch of Olectra electric buses marks a major milestone in Puducherry’s journey toward sustainable mobility. By adopting zero-emission vehicles, the city takes a strong step in reducing pollution, saving fuel, and enhancing public transport quality. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to environmental responsibility and aligns with India’s broader goal of promoting green transportation. The project showcases how technology and sustainability can work together for cleaner, smarter, and more efficient urban living.
