Farmers' participation in the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has more than doubled this year, with the state government covering the premium cost.

The state of Odisha has emerged as a leader in the successful implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), a flagship crop insurance scheme aimed at safeguarding the livelihoods of farmers across India.
With innovative strategies and proactive measures, Odisha's agricultural sector has witnessed a remarkable boost in enrolment, primarily due to the state's emphasis on premium coverage. Farmers' participation in the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has more than doubled this year, with the state government covering the premium cost.
According to analysis, 11,65,131 farmers enlisted in the kharif season 2022, bringing the total to more than 23.50 lakh.
Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Minister of Cooperation, highlighted that providing crop insurance free for small and marginal farmers has spurred this spike. He observed widespread farmer acceptance and engagement. He also emphasized farmers' enthusiasm for the program and their active participation.
Nayak emphasized the previously restricted enrollment of 10-11 lakh farmers out of 50 lakh agricultural households, as well as the insufficient region coverage. Only 10 lakh hectares of the 45 lakh agricultural hectares were insured. This highlights the need for more extensive outreach and coverage across the agricultural landscape.
In order to increase the accessibility of insurance benefits, the state government took an active role in paying the premium on behalf of farmers. This strategic action is intended to prevent small and marginal farmers from being excluded from the scheme's benefits.
As other states look to replicate Odisha's success, the central government is also considering incorporating some of Odisha's strategies into the national framework of the PMFBY. This positive development is expected to further strengthen the safety net for farmers across the country and uplift rural economies.
In essence, Odisha's exemplary approach to premium coverage under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana has not only propelled the state's agricultural sector but also set a precedent for comprehensive and farmer-centric crop insurance implementation nationwide.
