The central government has approved over ₹1,428.31 crore for purchasing five major crops from Odisha farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan announced this decision, aiming to support farmers facing challenges in getting fair prices for their produce.
This approval focuses on pulses and oilseeds, which are vital for Odisha’s agricultural economy. The government will procure moong, urad, groundnut, sunflower, and mustard directly from farmers. This move seeks to ensure that farmers receive the correct value for their crops and reduce their dependence on intermediaries.
During a virtual meeting at Krishi Bhavan in New Delhi, officials decided the quantities and values for each crop. The government will purchase these crops at MSP, guaranteeing farmers a secure market. The table below summarizes the procurement plan:
The total allocation exceeds ₹1,428 crore, reflecting the government’s commitment to supporting Odisha’s agricultural sector. This initiative is expected to boost pulses and oilseeds production in the state.
Minister Chauhan emphasized the need for a transparent procurement process. He stated that farmers must receive their rightful payments directly, without interference from middlemen. The government has introduced two major steps to prevent traders from buying crops cheaply from farmers and selling them at higher prices to procurement centers.
The first step is to ensure direct payments to farmers. The second is to monitor the procurement process closely, making sure all transactions are transparent and fair. These measures aim to protect farmers’ interests and encourage them to increase production.
Minister Chauhan praised Odisha farmers for maintaining sunflower cultivation. He assured them of government support, including scientific and technical assistance to expand sunflower growing areas and increase production. The government’s focus on sunflower aims to strengthen the state’s oilseed sector.
The success of this initiative depends on effective coordination between the state and central governments. If implemented properly, it can improve the livelihoods of Odisha’s farmers and enhance agricultural productivity.
Accurate and timely information remains crucial for farmers. Reliable updates on MSP, government schemes, and crop prices help farmers make informed decisions and maximize their returns.
