Mulching helps farmers conserve moisture, control weeds, and boost yields using organic or plastic materials. Costs for plastic mulch range from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per acre. Key crops include tomatoes, chillies, and strawberries.

Mulching involves covering the soil around plants with a protective layer. This layer can be made from organic materials like straw and grass or inorganic materials such as plastic films. The main purpose is to stabilize the soil environment and protect plant roots by creating a barrier between the soil and the air.
Mulching directly addresses two major issues in agriculture: moisture loss and weed growth. Without mulch, sunlight evaporates water from the soil, reducing its availability to crops. Mulch helps retain moisture underground, ensuring plants have access to water for longer periods. It also prevents weeds from competing with crops for nutrients, reducing the need for manual weeding.
Farmers can choose between organic and inorganic mulch based on their crop type and budget. Organic mulch uses natural materials that decompose over time, enriching the soil with nutrients. This type is suitable for long-term soil health. Inorganic mulch, mainly plastic films, is common in commercial vegetable farming. It provides effective weed control and moisture retention for crops like tomatoes, chillies, and strawberries.
The thickness of plastic mulch is usually measured in microns. For most crops, a thickness of 25 to 30 microns is standard. Organic mulch is typically applied in layers between 2 and 4 inches thick.
Applying mulch can be done manually with basic tools like hands and a rake for small gardens. Professional farmers may require specialized machinery for large-scale application. The cost of organic mulching is low, especially if farm waste is used. Plastic mulching costs range from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per acre, depending on film quality and labor requirements.
After harvest, plastic mulch should be removed from the field to prevent environmental harm. Biodegradable mulch options are also available, which decompose naturally after use.
Vegetables such as tomatoes, chillies, and capsicum, as well as fruits like strawberries and watermelons, benefit most from mulching. Orchard crops also see improved yields and quality with proper mulching practices.
By 2026, mulching is expected to become a necessary practice for profitable and sustainable farming. The initial investment is often recovered within a season due to higher yields and reduced labor costs.
